No, he could have jumped to an area off camera. He knew where the cameras were. Like Louis said (below) they did it deliberately; I just thought it was a stupid thing to do, especially when he's trying to plead his case later.

She could have given up her job...I don't buy that. Given the "powers" she worked for, you don't think it was just a teeny bit suspicious that she walked away from everything & never looked back for no particular reason?

Considering her job with those guys, it would've raised even more suspicion for her to walk away from them. The movie talks about how this battle between those 2 groups was ongoing for years.

Later in the movie the mom and son have a conversation in which she gives him a head start to get away from her before she has to go after him.

Plus, they have already proven they are willing to off anybody's family if they deem in needed.
