June 1 is one hot date

Phil Barber /

Posted: 16 hours ago

There are three dates an NFL general manager holds sacred — his anniversary, his kid's birthday and June 1, when the market is flooded with veteran players deemed too expensive by their former clubs. Before June 1, the hit for unpaid bonus money applies to that year's salary cap; after June 1, it doesn't bite you until the following year.

As always, the list of June 1 casualties will be unpredictable. Some players will be traded before then. Others could be retained. But it's still possible to make a good guess at who will be available after Memorial Day.

1. Jeremiah Trotter, LB, Washington. The Redskins' open-wallet approach to free agents leaves no cap room for Trotter, one of the game's beefiest (262 pounds) — and best — middle linebackers. At 27, he still has plenty of tread on the radials. It's possible he will return to Philadelphia; other interested parties include Seattle and Houston.

Eddie George in another uniform? It could happen, unless he agrees to restructure his contract.

2. Jason Gildon, LB, Pittsburgh. As the Steelers' defense has tilted toward Joey Porter, Gildon has become expendable. He'll be 32 in July and has lost a considerable amount of speed, but Pittsburgh's all-time sack leader still should draw some attention.

3. Eddie George, RB, Tennessee. It's hard to envision the Titans without George, their plow horse for eight seasons, but he might be gone if he refuses to renegotiate his contract.

4. Kurt Warner, QB, St. Louis. The most talked-about in-limbo veteran of 2004, Warner met with the Giants on May 11. His agent says six teams have expressed interest. But after being waylaid by concussions and arm injuries the past two seasons, Warner, who'll turn 33 in June, probably will be a backup.

5. Larry Allen, G, Dallas. One of the best guards ever, Allen fell out of shape and out of favor with coach Bill Parcells last year. If he finds some passion, he could be a great addition for a team that needs muscle up front.

I know he is a fat slob now, but do you think Emmit could motivate Allen to get back in shape? And besides, even at his diminished form, would your rather have Spikes or Allen at RG?

Trotter looks really good, and wouldnt mind taking a look at. As much as I like McKinnon, I just think that Trotter would be a better MLB to compliment the new dline style becuase it puts a lot of pressure on the LB's to shed blockers and that is McKinnons biggest weakness, that and his size.

I could see Allen just totally phoning it in after signing a fat contract with the cards. He's had some character issues, I wouldn't mess with him.

3-4!!!

Hayes, Mckinnon, Trotter, Thompson

Now that would be a pretty good linebacker group.
Now only if we had a great NT for a 3-4. Too bad they're hard to find. I hope you're not expecting Baron Tanner to do it :p

Heck just Hayes, Trotter, Thompson sounds like a better LB core to me.

According to there list, Kenyatta Walker may be nice to take a flyer on as a RG/RT prospect if he is cut. He is only 25.
I was shocked to see him. He hasn't played up to his potential, but he's not that bad. He was the 2nd OL taken in the draft (after BIG) four years ago.

Gannon

Today's NY Daily News - speculating on where the dominos might fall in the aftermath of the Kerry Collins signing - reiterated mild disbelieve that Denny will put all his cards on Josh McCown and listed Arizona as one of several places where Rich Gannon might end up.

Gannon has QB'd in Minny and is, no doubt, familiar with Denny's system (i.e. a lot of west coast mixed in with an aggressive vertical passing game). If he'd be willing to accept a backup role, I think Gannon would be an upgrade over Shaun King (and a good mentor for Josh) - at least for the short haul.

Jeff,

Has Collins signed with Oakland?

Report: Ex-Giants QB Collins to sign with Raiders
May 23, 2004
SportsLine.com staff

Kerry Collins will reportedly be going from one last-place team to another.

The former New York Giants quarterback has decided to accept a three-year contract from the Oakland Raiders, the New Daily News is reporting in Sunday's editions.

Collins, who left the Giants because of an unwieldy contract after the trade for Eli Manning, will reportedly force 2002 NFL MVP Rich Gannon out of Oakland for the same reason.

Robert Griffith SS was an all pro player with the Vikes before signing a lucrative contract with the Browns via free agency. Denny has indicated (after the draft) he would like depth at safety; perhaps he might pick up Griffith. However, I really don't know if he has anything left.

Griff played decent in CLE has had some injury problems and is old.
Sehorn is done. Dale Carter is up there in years DG brough him to MIN one year. I think Ty Law and McKenzie are both going to be available at some point.

Stick a fork in him, Sehorn is done. He never was fast and now he has lost a couple of more steps. When he was on the field last year, he was toast.

You are correct he signed with the Ravens for the minimum.

Also IMO Greens will not bring anybody in that is over the age of 30 maybe 32 max, just judging by the FA's he brought in and the FA's he didnt even want to look at. Which there are not going to be to many guys Green will want to look at come june 1st.

No way Rich Gannon ever suits up with the Cardinals. This guy didn't make it a full season under Dennis Green before being benched in favor of Sean Salisbury. According to my 1993 TSN Football yearbook, Dennis Green discards players who don't fit the "team concept." Gannon was critical of Green's decision to replace him as the starter.
