He said the hang up with Segal was voidable years. He said that the Cardinals will absolutely NOT do voidable years. But that they can get a fair deal with Roster Bonuses and such.

Of course they are. Do you really think they'd just throuw up their hands and say "forget it. We're done."?

Both sides still have motivation to get a deal done. The Cards want their player. Johnson and his agent want to get paid.

Imagine how difficult it must be to be so close to being a millionaire. The kid probably hasn't ever made more than $25k a year and now he's days away from calling the automated line for his bank and hearing "your balance is $1,553,874.03." Remeber what xmas eve was like as a kid? Times that feeling by 100

And it shoudn't be that hard. With the #16 and #18 picks signed, Johnson is slotted. He and his agent know, to the dollar, the value of the contracts signed above and below him. They know what Johnson's gonna make. They just have to come to terms on how he'll make it, and over what period of time.

This will get done quicker than people think.

It doesn't really seem as if the slotting theory has made a single bit of difference over say the last decade.

This thread gives us some hope that a deal can be done.....I was worried that the Cards or BJ's agent had "blown" the chance of signing a contract.

S11:

What "theory"? Since it's not a league-mandated system, "slotting" of the NFL's draftees is just shorthand for the establishment of relative draft position value as contracts are signed. Players and/ or their agents can decide that they're exceptions to the "rule" for any number of reasons (e.g., Kyle Boller's a 1st-round QB, so he figures he's worth more than the linemen drafted before and after him).

That said, I think there's still a reasonable expectation, for most players/ agents, that they'll sign a contract worth somewhat less than the guy drafted above them, and more than the guy below them. With those numbers filled in, the parameters of the Johnson negotiation are more-or-less defined.

Once the people involved get over any hurt feelings and bruised egos, what's left to do is mostly accounting. Johnson'll be in camp sooner rather than later.

I think what section 11 was referring to is that we've had extended holdouts even though the draftees surrounding our guys had been signed--se even though they'd been "slotted," it still didn't make negotiations any easier.

That's it exactly. It's a theory.
If was as easy as simply slotting, we'd have had both guys in on the 25th.

There's always exceptions, and they're (almost) always our exceptions.

Good point. In prior years, the Cardinals were their own worst enemies in this regard, as they refused to use the "creative accounting" routinely employed by other teams to get their first-rounders signed. Even though both parties knew the dollar range, the Cards had trouble getting there with their preferred contract terms.

Well, hell has frozen over. Pace got a second-tier option bonus. Now, all things are possible.
