Just did some research on McCown changing my mind on drafting a QB...

Hmmm...wonder why? Outside of those 3 games he played at the end of the seaosn last year he was awful. Was on course to play himself completly off the roster.

Yeah I think he is a bit skeptical as well he should!

Well, in this quote from the Dec. 8 Arizona Republic, he doesn't seem to think it could have turned very well no matter what...

"McCown replaced Jeff Blake to start the second half. On his second series he
was faced with a second down at his own 7. McCown dropped back to pass, but
found no open receiver.

He turned left, spotted a white jersey and threw. Only the pass was backward
and hit offensive tackle L.J. Shelton in the face mask. The ball bounced in the
end zone until it was recovered by running back Marcel Shipp for a safety. That
made it 36-0 49ers.

"We're lucky we gave up only two points rather than seven," said Shelton, a
glass-half-full kind of guy.

"That was pretty bad," McCown said. "That might have been one of the worst
plays of my career.

Might?"

That's not the point. The point is he didn't say it could have turned out okay, he basically admits it's a brain fart. He didn't take a calculated risk--he paniced.

The reason I posted that wasn't to rip on McCown, but rather to prove my "unprovable" point.

But...even he, at that point, is now resorting to "hindsight".

My point was simply that while it can retrospectively be said that it wasn't the most advised of moves, it did display some gut level instinctiveness "at the moment".

I say this because, in my basketball playing days I was a classic "assist/ball handler/guard" (the term "point guard had not been invented yet).

I played much the style of John Stockton or Jason Kidd. I can remember many times that I had to "gear myself down" because sometimes I would do things to get the ball to a team-mate and they just flat weren't ready. Their "hands" or reaction time just were not quick enough to respond to what I had done. Like I said, I sometimes had to "dumb down" what I could do in that sense because of limitations to other players.

I'm not saying that's the situation here, at all. But having experienced that, neither am I so quick to totally condemn Josh for that play.

WOW That was uncalled for.

Give me a brain? I am not the one on here singing the praises of the biggest hairbrained mistake McCown has ever made! (He himself said that) That, like you, was a big mistake!

Your a fool! Do you honestly even watch the games? Seriously? You can tell us? I mean between the torrid affairs with princes of neverlands and teaching old women how to do the cha-cha, I can't imagine you have time!

HAHAHAHAHA

Now your comparing yourself to Stockton and Kidd? hahaaha My god man take your prozac quick!

Gut level instinctiveness? hahahaha

Yeah like being in a war zone and running the opposite direction? that is what that play was akin too!

Look, I'm not "condemning" him. But, that play was ill-advised in hindsight, during the play, or maybe even when they drew it up on the chalkboard and said "okay, Josh. You hang on to the ball as the pass rush gathers around you, LG will slip out a couple of yards into the end zone and then you rifle it at his head." No matter WHEN you look at it pre-, present-, or post-play, it was bad judgement.

He had a brain fart and there is NO defending it; and I'm not certain I know why you're even attempting to.

Josh will be okay in his NFL career. Even if he gets voted into the HOF, he and the rest of the world will look at that play and say "Brain Fart."

<sigh>

Can we please move past that ONE play and see the bigger picture. Yes, it was a bad play. He though Shipp was there and he wasn't and hit Shelton. OK, stupid play. He learned a valuable lesson that every QB in his first starts learns. Move on.

The big picture is...again...he improved from rookie year to 2nd year and he improved through his 3 starts. He got better in each start.

Does he have things to work on? You bet

Can he continue to get better? IMO, hell yes

Will the new coaches make him better? I believe he is going to get excellent coaching and will improve.

But to whine about one stupid play is ludicrous. See the big picture with McCown. If you don;t like him that's fine. I am not going to argue about that. But don't keep pointing to one lousy play because that play isn't some microcosm of McCown's career up to this point.

Like I said in my very first post. I'm not denying that in hindsight it was a brain fart....my whole point was that it may not have been quite as bad a one as many have made it out to be...and I attempted to explain why. I'd rather see Josh make that kind of "brain fart" at that point than react like a Dave Brown.

At least you have the courtesy to argue decently....as opposed to LV. His "semi-hidden agenda" is getting old.

I understand your arguement, but my point is he didn't try to think anything through. He didn't think, "well, this is a backwards pass so LG is eligible;" he almost blindly threw it to a red jersey. He didn't think, "Well, even if LJ can't get out of the end zone, I'll just be sacked for a saftey anyway;" he reacted to pressure in an ill-advised manner. He didn't think at all, if he had he would have tried to step up in what was left of the pocket and take the sack.

And with this line you've robbed me of all the pleasure I would have derived from the one-liners I had lined up about your basketball skills being ahead of your time. Damn. ;)

I tried to argue decently and you said I needed a brain. How does that make you decent?

It was a bone head play, and it had nothing to do with "gut level insticnts" or any other silver lining your trying to spin on it.

McCown said it himself. I rest my case. I am done talking about.

As far as my hidden agenda? Nothing hidden. I dont like the move, and I am not sold on McCown. To me, it throws another FA 'need' in the mix and takes money away this team could be throwing at a good cover cb or DT, or WR.

Now it appears, and no one knows for sure, we will be starting a 3rd year QB with no playing experience, have 2 2nd yr WR's, and a rookie WR starting, and a backup QB the likes of, well, I dont know who they will be able to get at rock bottom price that gives this team the ability to win.

Actually in that sense. I WAS. My only problem was I was "blessed" with Spud Webb physical stature. :D

...and I certainly never would have won any NBA slam dunk comp.

Dudes chill out it's just one bad play he tried something being down 36-0 and it bombed. Favre makes plays like that all the time.

What is more impressive is he didn't Leon it after the game he took the blame.

What is more impressive is 2 ints in those last 3 games. He apparently did take sacks rather then just throw the ball up for grabs. I think his rating in one of those last games was 90.

QBs take a long time to develop, years and years. only a tiny handful can be good right away.

I think McCowan showed a lot at the end. He could have gone into those games threw 6 or 7 ints and had a rating of 50. Then I would be more worried.
