While we KNOW that this team is NOT the same 'ol Cards teams of the past... We KNOW this team is far better coached and loaded with more talent across the field than any other team in recent or distant memory... They do still wear Red & White with a cute little red bird on their helmets... So, in typical Cardinal fashion, we lost a game yesterday in a manner few, if any other teams have ever done. 99 yards... Three converted 4th downs... a tipped pass that in virtually all other instances is either intercepted or falls incomplete, but instead is caught for a big gain. 18 plays... 2:37 seconds consumed to go the entire length of the field... Seriously, when was the last time, if ever, a team has lost in that fashion?? I honestly can't recall one... :bang:

So, just how different is this Cardinal team from all others? I think we know a loss like this would ordinarily put a Cardinal team in their historical funk for the rest of the season... However, today we sit atop the NFC West, with a 2 game lead on the 9ers. Does this Cardinal team somehow bounce back and shed the legacy of losing, of falling short, of putridness... and win the west? Or, does this loss represent what it's been about for this franchise over the vast majority of their history? A full-blown derailment...

What say you??

I don't think this loss is even remotely devastating. This team is still on pace to win 10 games.

This loss really upset me. I was really grumpy last night. But that said, I do think they go on to beat the Vikings.

What really frustrates me is that I think we had a chance at the #2 seed before yesterday's loss. I think that we beat Minny next week, and that the Bengals beat them when they play as well. That would be 3 losses for Minny. If we had won yesterday, we would also have 3 losses. Assuming we beat the Niners as well and that the rest of the scenario played out, both us and the Vikings would be 10-3 at with 3 games left to play.

Yeah, I know that's a lot of ifs, but I needed to twist the knife a little more. :)

It shouldn't be a crushing defeat that sends them into a funk. A good coach will get them to focus on the positives, put the end aside, and get fired up for a huge game against Minny. I think Whisenhunt is a good coach. We'll see.

Your poll has nothing to do with your thread title (imo). I think regardless of how yesterday's game turned out, we stand a good chance of losing to the Vikings. I don't think yesterday's loss is going to be the cause of us losing to the Vikes (if we lose); I just think it's going to be a tough game. No idea if we win the West or not.

Vegas, baby, yeah!
I hated this loss - it came down to another goal line stand in the last seconds, and well, we just didn't do it. I hated this loss because I think we should have won.

Regardless...

I think we lose to Minny on Sunday. Leinart or Warner, won't matter. Their pass rush will eat the QB and running game alive. Farve and AP will pick apart our defense. Minny has power on both sides of the ball, and they're simply going to come out and overwhelm us. That's how I see it.

SF will probably win next Sunday (they play @ SEA), which means we meet SF on Monday Night for what I think will be the NFC West Title Game.

If we win against SF (which I think we will), we will end up going 10-6, having to play DET, STL, and GB. No tie breaker - we win the division outright.

If we lose against SF, we will go 9-7. SF will go 9-7 as well, with the remaining games after ours being @ PHI, DET, @ STL, to which they will pick up 2 out of 3.

Therefore, I'm already writing off the MIN game - it all comes down to SF. Win, and we're back in the playoffs. Lose, and we're out. That's it.

Our secondary is still weak, just like last year. Fortunately we've been able to overcome it so far this season despite being torched through the air by several teams. Now our run defense is starting to falter, just like last year.

Hopefully they'll be able to find a second wind, just like last year before its too late.

Gosh people NFL teams lose on the last play once in a while, Jake was the master of this kind of thing, how many times did he do this to a team?

It's over, time to play the Vikes, no rest.

I actually think the team has a decent chance of bouncing back and beating the Vikings, especially if Warner and Dansby play. I just hope the loss doesn't accelerate the sale of tickets to the purple freaks.

I agree. Tenn was playing very good and gave the Cards some stiff competition. ML was a bit shakey in the first half but played well in the second half. We might need him more and I think this game built his confidence.

Our D and our D Coor should take this as a wake up call IMO.

Even if we lose to the Vikings we will beat the 49ers, beat the Lions & Rams and possibly the Pack and finish with 10 or 11 wins.

The loss hurts but this team is not like previous Cardinal teams, they know what they are capable of when they operate at their best.

As of today this is the worst loss for me personally as a fan of around 60 years EVER. Not that it will have the worst outcome for the year but to lose it on 4th down with time running out on a play which appeared well covered just tore my heart out. Mybe I will feel better in a couple of days but I still feel like I had my leg cut off as of today. I think that would have locked in the division. Now one has to wonder? Will Kurt play next week? No matter how you cut it this team is at its best when passing. Our runners only compliment our passing and our runners are good. Matt showed me something after the first quarter. The Gods were with TN on that deflected pass on the final drive. That in itself could have cost the game. No excuses however. We lost fair and square. SF plays Seattle soon. I guess we need to root for Seattle as we have beat them twice. Hopefully Kurt is ready to play next week not only because of his play but because of his presence. The guy makes other guys play better. Matt will have to earn that over time. The positive that came from that game for me was just maybe Matt can replace Kurt when Kurt retires but he will not be a Kurt Warner we have grown accustomed to. No one will.

San Fran has a tough batch of games the next 3 weeks: @ SEA, AZ, and @ PHI. After that, its DET and STL. It will help tremendously that a) we beat them and b) they go at best 1-2 the next three games. I am not confident about the Vikings game, but after that, we should be ok.

I'm trying to stay optimistic guys!

I understand people attempting to minimize what happened... that this loss is not so unique. That other teams have lost by last minute TD drives. I get that. However, when you get your head out of the sand, you'll see that to the contrary, not many teams, if any, have lost like this. Again, a full length of the field, 18 play, 3 4th down conversions, tipped pass, no time left on the clock TD winning drive... This was indeed, a very uncommon way to lose a game.

I don't care how uncommon it was. It wasn't devastating in any way shape or form.

The Cards make history again!

Really, it's just another variation on the theme of Cardinaling away the W. The song remains the same, it's just the lyrics that change.

How do you know? Not saying it is devastating, however, I don't understand how you can say it wasn't...

I'll give it a go.

Vince Young does stuff like that, the players know that.

If I was on the team I'd be pleased Matt did as well as he did given no reps.

I'd chalk it up to just bad circumstances and move on, knowing Warner was out and likely to play again I just don't see how bad it could be.

Because we still have a 2 game lead in the division with 5 to go and are in complete control regardless of that loss or a loss next week if it were to happen. So it isnt devastating at all.

I am not sure I have ever saw a team lose exactly like this. 4th down, no time on clock, need a TD to win and the receiver catches the ball in a crowd. Game over! I did not even have time to scream. I have seen hundreds of games with time nearly out and winners but not like this. Not only that but this has playoff implications for both teams. I am still down and I will still be down tomorrow. Who knows how it will effect the psyche of the Cards. Matt already had this chalked up as his first win. The DB's are still having nightmares. Probably the entire team needs therapy over this one.

Again, how do you know? When will we know? That's the point of this thread really... What if we lose next week, and then again on Monday Night? Would it be plausible to look back at this game as a huge factor for that type of skid? I think so... I think a loss like this can seriously mess up a team. Both physically and mentally, the Cards took a beating yesterday. And the repercussions are not always felt the next day, or the next game. I can very easily see this team (they are the Cards after all) reeling from this type of loss. Self-doubt begins to creep in. Questions about yourself, your teammates, your coaches... "How can we let up that sort of drive?" "How did we not get one stop during a 99 yard, 18 play drive?"

So you can scream all day today and all week that this loss isn't a "devastating" loss... However, I don't believe we will know the answer until after the Monday Night game.

It's going to take some strong willed guys to keep fighting & answering. The injuires have me very concerned

How do these quotes sound?

The defensive backs in particular sat around in partial uniform longer than usual after the 20-17 loss, no doubt discussing how Vince Young collected 94 passing yards on the last possession on nine completions.

“I’d be lying if I was sitting here and said I’m not worried about it because we fought for a full 60 minutes and, at the end, we came up short in the last six seconds of the game,” safety Antrel Rolle said.

“Unfortunately, it had to hurt at the end,” Dockett said. “I’d rather get blown out than lose a game like that.”

“When you are six seconds away from winning it, it makes it even tougher,” Whisenhunt said.

“This was as close to a bad feeling you had by losing the Super Bowl,” Whisenhunt said. “But we can’t let it affect us going forward.”
