Didn't see a separate thread for our special-teams phenom so I'm starting one.

To me, his FG block was the turning point in the game. And I feel he's the best 'transition game' player in recent Cardinal history. The guy is phenominal on the coverage units.

Great game Justin!

Anybody hear who got the game ball?

Thanks for starting the thread because he is simply a difference maker. A couple of penalties were called against the Lions because of his play. On a Lions KO return I yelled !HOLDING! because a Lion was grabbing and yanking on Bethel and sure enough the refs heard me. :)

Cards are giving up 0.8 yds per punt return and Bethel is a major reason why.

I think we have all heard the term hidden yardage. Bethel truly helps the team with this as well. Does anyone know where to find stats on penalties called against a player and who they fouled?

Maybe special teams player of the week? Blocked the field goal that would have done us in. Also had an amazing tackle on either kickoff or a punt.

Why with this phisycal skills cannot develop in free safety or his role will be limited just on special team

what?

He is only ST for now and has been for a while. He is developing at corner and im sure the staff is working hard at it to make him a good nickle guy so he can be more than ST.

I know you're being facetious, but I watched Whis & Phillip Rivers destroy Billy Davis' defense yesterday at the Link. And the Chargers made their comeback without Malcolm Floyd.

One thing to keep in mind is that even though Whiz is calling the plays they are using McCoy's playbook.

First Cards Punt and Bethel draws the holding call. He was mugged/tackled coming off the line but still was in position to ensure the returner went out of bounds. TM beat his man coming of the line and was the first one there but didn't make the tackle.

31s next opportunity is the FG attempt by the Lions. He gets flagged for running into the Kicker, pretty ticky tack call but he did touch Akers leg.

Next opp is Cards punt. 31 first one down and takes a position to down the punt inside the 5 yd line. FC by Lions. Kerry Taylor was the other gunner and arrived shortly after Bethel.

Next opp is Lions punt. 31 is man to man on one gunner. He stays with him well but tough to gauge much since the Punter kicks it to the opposite side of the field just inside the out of bounds line. Cason and Arenas were on the other gunner and they stuffed him big time.

Next opp, KO after Cards FG. Bethel once again first man there. Spurlock thinks about bringing it out but stops just before crossing the goal line.

Next opp Cards KO after Ellington's TD. 31 gets another holding call against the Lions and they have to start at the 7 yd line.

Next opp, Cards punt after pitiful 2 minute drill. 31 is double teamed and TM is the other gunner and only has one man on him. TM beats his man and is the first to arrive. Alfonso is a close 2nd coming up the middle of the field. Bethel is next and he fires in and makes the tackle and causes a fumble that the Lions recover.

TM is also a very good gunner, Taylor did a nice job when it was his turn and Alexander, Alfonso and Dray are also very good so I get BA's optimism about us winning ST's every game.

Next opp, Cards punt. 31 is doubled again & TM has one guy on him. TM is first to arrive, Bethel beat his double team but then a 3rd man picks him up and blocks him very well. TM doesn't make the tackle but does force Spurlock to move sideways even though a blocker has engaged him. Acho is now in place and forces Spurlock to continue sideways. Alfonso flashes in and trips him up while Acho and Rashad fall on Spurlock to make sure he stays down. Lions have to start at their own 6 yd line.

Next opp, Lions punt. Cason and Arenas double team a gunner who blows past them and forces PP to fair catch the ball. 31 was on the other gunner and was running with him but didn't really make an effective block.

Lions punt and another FC from PP. Looked like 31 & TM were doubling one gunner.

Next opp is Lions FG attempt that 31 blocks. DUDE is uber fast.

Cards punt, Arenas is first man down and 31 is 2nd. Both were only singled and it was obvious the Lions weren't using their return team. Good punt and Bethel downs the ball at the 8 yd line.

Lions punt deep from their end, 31 and TM double the gunner but they don't do a good job. PP gets about a 7 yd return.

Looks to me like the Cards need to work on punt return blocking but other than that are incredibly good.

I absolutely loved the fact that he didn't back down after getting the 5 yard penalty on the FG. Many other players wouldn't have risked a 2nd penalty.

Kudos.

It was a whole bunch of young guns (most notably Ellington, Kerry Taylor, Jaron Brown, Bethel, Mathieu and T Jefferson).

At least this season, a theoretical rule of thumb is that "the stuff guys do in OTA's and preseason (both good and bad) is likely repeat itself during the real games.

Ha ha...no...just really appreciated all the detail and effort you put into that.

Thanks. I also did a ton of slomo and watching the Dline and especially Oline play when I rewatched the game. I don't know that I will have the time to do this going forward but did enjoy doing it this time.

Posters like Mitch and K9 who do this on a regular basis have my respect and admiration because it does take a lot of time.

Hmph. According to most on this board Graves should get all the credit for drafting Bethel because Keim did not have a say in drafts when Graves was GM.

On Bethel, he has really defined a role for himself on this team. Nice late pick grabbing an athletic freak and finding a fit.

I'm of the belief that SK should get partial credit or partial blame for any draft pick prior to becoming GM. Ultimately all that matters though is what he does from the time he took the GM position.

Every team hits and misses on draft choices. So far, the 2013 draft looks promising.

The biggest sin of the Graves/Whisenhunt era IMO was over-paying for mediocre or worse veteran offensive linemen and not addressing the position in the draft.

And, of course, not adequately replacing Kurt Warner after he retired.

Yup, but if someone is going to blame Keim for being a Super Scout, then others will try to balalnce that out. ;)
