After the combine I really think ARZ should consider trading down. I feel they should be looking at OLB & CB with their 1st 2 picks but there isn't going to be a OLB or CB available at #20 that won't be considered a reach. ARZ could go for a S but Clinton-Dix is the only one that makes sense but he will be gone & I don't like Pryor at #20.

BA said he wants a blocking 1st TE and there is no way you take one at #20, Amaro & Ebron are pass catchers like Housler who is already on the roster.

Roby is the only Round 1 CB who will be there at #20 but would be a reach at that point, Dennard & Gilbert will be gone.

BPA at #20:
DE Stephen Tuitt - Makes no sense unless DD is going to get cut.
OLB Ryan Shazier - Too small to be a 3-4 OLB.
CB Bradley Roby - Good player but worthy of #20?

The guys that could be of use for ARZ are slated for late first - second round guys like:

OLB Kyle Van Noy - I would love to take him at #20 but stock took a hit at Combine.

OLB Jeremiah Attaochu - Strictly a pass rusher, not much of a cover guy or run stuffer.

CB Kyle Fuller - Probably the best COVER CB in draft but not considered a first rounder.

CB Stanley Jean-Bapstiste Tall, strong CB ala Richard Sherman.

I could see San Fran coming up for Dennard if he gets past the Steelers and

Bears. He would be nasty on that D. I think Gilbert is going to be a Lion

at 10. I could see the Lions getting Van Noy in the second round. They

need a linebacker and he is best buds with Ziggy.

Maybe, and maybe this is what's going to happen. But I'll raise this--from a roster-construction standpoint, is a safety really that valuable in Bowles' system?

Last offseason, we discarded two pro bowl-caliber safeties and replaced them with Rashard Johnson and a zombie from the Walking Dead and still had a Top 5 defense.

There are defensive systems out there that require high-caliber safety play. That Cover-3 in Seattle requires a top safety. The Pittsburgh zone blitz requires a top safety. The San Francisco defense doesn't. I'd argue that our defense doesn't--and Keim and Arians understand that they'd be better off pushing resources into the Front-7 and the cornerbacks than they would be with a top safety prospect.

And we HAVE two nice safety prospects in Matthieu and Tony Jefferson. Jefferson played 100% of our defensive snaps in week 16. I understand liking Clinton-Dix and Pryor as prospects, but I have concerns about their utility in the system and value compared to more limited prospects that come with less opportunity cost later in the draft.

Here is how I feel on the matter. I think Pryor will be one of a couple players we target in round 1. I believe the reason is his versatility. His skills fit both S positions very well and is one of his strengths.

Re: Mathieu...I believe we will see him more at CB than S going forward. Ok, maybe not more, but as much at least. If you add a versatile S in Pryor, you can put him at SS when Mathieu is at FS and then you can move him to whatever spot you prefer when Mathieu slips into the slot.

Jefferson is the wild card though I would guess he develops. He made plays at Oklahoma and he is making plays in the pros.

Given your original plan, my draft would be...

1-Dee Ford - OLB - Auburn
2-Jimmie Ward - S - Northern Illinois
3-Bashaud Breeland - CB - Clemson

I'm warming to the idea of Dee Ford. I think if you combine him with Abraham, Campbell, Dockett, that's a pretty good pass rush. Dee wouldn't have to be dynamic in year one either.

I don't know about going 3 straight picks for defense. I know BA says you don't draft a QB to sit, but I think some of the 2nd-3rd QBs have some appealing traits and have a good chance to develop (Garrapolo, Mettenberger, even Murray).

Maybe:

1) Dee Ford
2) Mettenberger
3) Jean-Baptiste

What I like about Ford is that he brings a different element to our defense than what we already have at OLB. My big issue with Acho, Okafor, and Alexander last year is that they are all essentially the same player.

Ford brings burst from the outside to compliment the power of Campbell and the quickness of Dockett.
