Outside linebacker Karlos Dansby, hobbled by injuries all preseason, might be able to begin practice next week, according to those close to the situation.
Dansby's absence has been a sore point with coach Dennis Green this off-season. Green hasn't hid his displeasure with Dansby, and Calvin Pace has solidified his position as Dansby's replacement on the strong side.
Dansby and his agent, Kirk Wood, met with Green and front office officials, including Vice President of Football Operations Rod Graves and Senior Director of Football Operations John Idzik on Wednesday. The meeting was long and amicable, with both sides presenting their positions and concerns.
Barring a setback, Dansby could practice next week, most likely starting Wednesday. The Cardinals will work out today and Sunday and then take Monday and Tuesday off.
Even if Dansby returns Wednesday, it's doubtful he would be able to play in the regular-season opener on Sept. 10 against San Francisco. But Cardinals officials emerged from the meeting feeling better about Dansby's situation than they have this preseason.
"We're going to get him rolling here pretty soon," Graves said. "I'm hoping he'll be able to go as early as next week."
Dansby had surgeries on a finger and thumb in the off-season, but it's a toe injury that kept him from practicing in training camp. The injury has bothered him for a couple years but had become worse in recent weeks, Dansby has said. Dansby consulted specialists, who concluded that surgery wasn't needed, and Dansby has reported improvement in the past week.
When he does begin practice, Dansby could be at a new position. Because of Pace's emergence, Dansby is likely to move to the weak side, where he would challenge Orlando Huff for playing time.

Duckjake said:Has Pace really"emerged"? I haven't seen anything spectacular from him. Could be that Dansby takes back over at his old spot and Pace is #1 backup.
Shane H said:I dunno. Pace has been pretty damn solid so far this pre-season.
Must be mostly a contract issue.Evil Ash said:Dansby and his agent, Kirk Wood, met with Green and front office officials, including Vice President of Football Operations Rod Graves and Senior Director of Football Operations John Idzik on Wednesday. Duckjake said:But solid enough to move out players like Dansby and Huff? Dansby makes spectacular plays and I've seen Pace play OK but other than the one sack not really do too much. I guess that's pretty good for a guy who has been a DE for 3 years.
It really doesn't matter because preseason tells us less and less about players abilities every year. Calvin will have plenty of chances to show he can do the job.

First we need to get to decent, then we can talk about elevation to good...only then can we talk about special.cheesebeef said:that sounds oddly familiar...
if/WHEN Dansby's healthy, he's got to be on the field at all times - he can elevate the D from decent to special.

It's a new rule. I'm surprised you didn't get the memo.
I only look at decent porn, anyway.40yearfan said:I guess that means no more porn surfing.

CardLogic said:Beside minor injuries, and discontent over his contract, it appears that Dansby didn't want to participate is has become a too long preseason. Pretty much looks the same as what Terrell Owens has done, with different twists and tweaks (pun intended).
For now, I'd make Dansby a backup on either side until he proves he's better at his position than Pace or Huff.WildBB said:For now I'd give Pace his shot for the first two games untill Dansby gets up to speed.

And I'd start to create special packages for Karlos and spot him where applicable.
He missed all of camp. He needs the conditioning. He needs the reps. Work him into a greater role gradually - as he earns it.
I also think that in fairness to Calvin and Orlando - they paid their dues during training camp and shouldn't lose their starting job just because last year's starter's "toe" feels better.
When and if Karlos can prove - in open competiton - he deserves to start, that's when he should start. And in game situations where the coaches feel they can work him in on different packages (like Pace playing down) they should put him in.
I just think it would be bad for team chemistry/work ethic to automatically give him a Mulligan.
At least a few times last night, Pace lined up at DE on obvious passing downs.WildBB said:The B. Berry injury is also going to mean that more depth is needed at the DE and Pace might be needed there before it's all said and done. But Smith is also looking good there too, but as a starter?
WildBB said:No he doesn't need to be in there from the get go. But when he's up to speed
he's proven enough to me the last two yrs. - unquestionably Berry , Wilson and him have been the playmakers on D along with Dockett and Darling somewhat.
Duckjake said:I agree. He's already proven he's better than the other LB's. All Dansby needs to prove is that he's healthy.
