It isn't about being sold on him, it's being able to accept his issues rather than issues with the pass rush. Where Bethel struggles is when he has to cover for long periods of time. He gets a bit lost in open space. I am ok with that because most CBs are the same. Where I am not ok is QBs not feeling pressured to make quick decisions and being comfortable in the pocket.

And where did I say pass rusher was not priority number 1? I just think CB and OL are just a notch below pass rusher in need as well. I know people want an ILB really bad, I am more than willing to accept what we get from Minter than I am Bethel, to me CB is a much more important piece (unless of course the ILB is a pass rusher too).

Every team's priority is the pass rush even for teams with a pass rush. Denver has the best young DE in football and they traded up for Shane Ray.

LoL, and BA repeated that on radio today. Tall SS with speed - umm... you have one already - he's called DBuc. He even said they were fine with the olinemen they have, and DJHumphries will be fine next year, lol
Lol, lets just put PP and 5 SS's back there. Along with DBuch at ILB

Whiffing on 1st rounders? You mean the 1 out of 3 (debatable)? Humphries not playing this year was clearly the goal from day one.. so to say otherwise is revisionist history. Cooper is the maybe. Deon was a stroke of genius.

Whatever you say. You probably are wiser than me ;)

This was the big question mark going into the year, but both Woodley & Okafor were huge disappointments.

My first 2 picks in the draft would be pass rushers, there is no going overkill with that need....can never have enough of them.

Shalique Calhoun & Noah Spence are my picks. Draft a CB, DL, ILB & OC with the other picks. I would sign a veteran CB as well because we need at least 2 to replace Powers & keep Bethel soley on ST's.
East to get compensation for mediocre pass rushers too once you can afford to toss them

We have put this off for far, far too long. Last year we blew a #1 on an OL Arians clearly has no intention of playing rather than taking Randy Gregory or Shane Ray. How did that work out.

People complain a lot about the coverage by our LBs and some of the DBs but the overwhelming problem is that the opposing QBs almost inevitably have all day to throw. That has to change or we're not getting any better.
Weren't both of those players gone when we picked?

You can get lucky later in the draft but finding a dynamic pass rusher at 29 in the first round... this is a free agent solution in my opinion :)

Elite pass rushers are typically not available in free agency

He's not, he can't play the ball in the air he's a safety not a CB IMO. He gets turned around so easily.

As we witnessed with Peterson yesterday, even an all-pro can get turned around when the QB has all day to survey the field and pump fake half a dozen times.

I just need to point out that these same needs were needs going into the draft last year and instead of taking Shaq Thompson we took a guy who never saw the field or never put on a uniform. I honestly believe on this defense Thompson could have made a huge difference.

This is like saying to be a millionaire I need a million dollars.

Duh, and just like in that situation getting it is a lot harder than deciding you want it.

Every year we say we need this and every year we do something else. This has been going on for about 30 plus years not just the last few.

What's the last great and I mean league wide known Cardinal pass rusher?

Anyone?

Name one Cardinal pass rusher in the hall of fame?

Name the last pro bowl DE from the Cardinals?

P.S I truly don't know the answer to these questions but I thought It'd be fun to pick other posters brains I am sure we'll find out things we did not know.

I would say Simeon Rice was the last elite pass rusher we had. He averaged just over 10 sacks a season. He was the Defensive Rookie of the year. And, he made a Pro Bowl playing for the Cardinals.

You can probably make an argument for bertrand barry as well.

Berry was more of an effort guy, I'd say Rice. Or that one great season Abraham had.

Rice at his best was basically unblockable. We have not had a guy like that in ages. We've filled the gap with every old veteran and too-slow guy on the planet and we need to get a real player in that role. And fast.

Travis LaBoy, Chike Okeafor, Lamar Woodley, Matt Shaughnessy, Sam Acho, Obrien Schofield, Joey Porter, Clark Haggans, Cody "2nd Round" Brown, Stewart Bradley....enough already.

Markus Golden looks like a good player but it's pretty clear he's too small and not quite fast enough to really be an elite, game-changing pass rusher.

Bethel is fine if you can pressure the QB.

Bethel is the long, fast Free Safety we've been looking for. He was even drafted out of Presbyterian as a Safety.. He's NOT a corner and will never develop into what we need on the outside.

Don't get me wrong; I love me some Rashad. But let's face it, he's limited athletically.

I was thinking Rice and then maybe Swan when he was in his prime but he wasn't an edge rusher.

We need a Freeney in his prime.

We need the 2nd coming Swan that stays healthy and goes to the Hall of Fame.

Here's what I want, I want a HOF DE rusher and a HOF DT.

Oh and a HOF QB.

I don't want much do I? :)

Now here's some fun homework if anyone cares to put together the best list of pass rushers we COULD have taken in the draft but didn't?

I'd say that'd be an ASTOUNDING list.

Don't know how much of a pass rusher Shaq Thompson would have been but he would have filled in nicely at OLB. A lot better than what we trotted out there all season.

Rice was great but that was thanks to that great line we had. In 1998 we had Rice, Wadsworthless, and Swann on that line. Give us that line again and this team would be untouchable.

So you want to put a guy who struggles in coverage when space is created between him and his man in more space? I don't get that.

I think you mean ILB? Pair him with Deone and have the lightest pair of ILBs in the league?

Thompson is only 6'0", 230. He'd be an ILB in our system.
