When Steve Keim was promoted to GM in 2012, he indicated that his roster building philosophy revolves around a succession of 3 year plans.

If one looks at Keim's first three years as GM, his 3 year plan came to fruition, as in year 3 the Cardinals found themselves atop the NFC West and entered the Lombardi Trophy chase as the #2 seed in the NFC. As we know, the Cardinals' 2015 season ended on a 49-15 loss to the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Championship game.

In an April 10, 2015 article on the Cardinals' website, beat reporter Darren Urban wrote: There is a constantly evolving three-year plan, with analytics and the salary cap crunched to see what makes the most sense for each signing.

While last year's 7-8-1 disappointment may have seemed a non sequitur...Keim was already starting to flip the roster in drawing up his blueprint for his 2nd 3 year plan. The Cardinals did not make the playoffs in Keim's first year, but did in years 2 and 3. This is what Keim is aiming for again -- the playoffs in 2017 (with the hope of going as far as they can) and a run for the Lombardi Trophy in 2018.

Put in this context, the fact that the Cardinals had 20 UFAs this off-season (most of which they did not re-sign) coupled with Keim's passive aggressiveness in free agent market begins to make better sense. As does his intent to amass as many 2018 NFL Draft compensatory picks as he possibly could. It appears that the Cardinals will receive 4 compensatory picks...one in Round 3 and three in rounds 4-6.

While we are already seeing a vastly different roster than the one two years ago, next year's roster could be drastically different, as once again close to 20 current Cardinals will become free agents following this season, and some very important 2018 roster decisions will be made on the highest paid veterans:

QB Carson Palmer 2018 Cap: $20.6M 2018 Dead Money: $6.6M 2018 Cap Savings: $14M

S Tyrann Mathieu 2018 Cap: $14.9M 2018 Dead Money: $4.9M 2018 Cap Savings: $9.9M

T Jared Veldheer 2018 Cap: $10.3M 2018 Dead Money: $3.3M 2018 Cap Savings: $7.0M

G Mike Iupati 2018 Cap: $9.7M 2018 Dead Money: $3.4M 2018 Cap Savings: $6.3M

LB Deone Bucannon 2018 Cap: $8.7M 2018 Dead Money: $0 2018 Cap Savings: $8.7M

Whenever the cap savings is significantly more than the dead money, this is where GMs can make the decision to move on from veteran players if it makes the best sense for the team moving forward.

Interestingly, and clearly by design, this off-season Keim addressed each one of these positions:

QB Blaine Gabbert (for a one year prove it deal and the chance, if successful, to succeed Palmer in 2018)

S Budda Baker 2018 Cap: $1.6M

T Will Holden 2018 Cap: $622K

G Dorian Johnson 2018 Cap: $719K

LB Haason Reddick 2018 Cap: $3.1M

In looking ahead to 2018
--the Cardinals--as is with Palmer, Mathieu, Velldheer, Iupati and Bucannon's salaries factored in---have a projected $29,581,448 in cap space.

When one looks at the positions -- here are the players signed beyond this year who would appear to be strong 2018 roster candidates:

RB: David Johnson ($889K); T.J. Logan ($605K)
WR: J.J. Nelson ($757K); Chad Williams ($758K)
TE: Germaine Gresham ($7.25M)
T: D.J. Humphries ($2.84M); Will Holden ($622K)
G: Evan Boehm ($757K); Dorian Johnson ($719K)
C: A.Q. Shipley ($2.1M); Cole Toner ($676K)
NT: Rodney Gunter ($832K);
DE: Robert Nkemdiche ($2.3M); Josh Mauro ($3.3M)
OLB: Chandler Jones ($15.5M); Markus Golden ($1.2M)
ILB: Haason Reddick ($3.1M);
CB: Patrick Peterson ($14.9M); Brandon Williams ($824K); Elie Bouka ($630K)
S: Budda Baker ($1.6M); Rudy Ford ($590K)
K: Phil Dawson ($3.5M)

If WR Larry Fitzgerald retires, his cap hit for 2018 is $4.85M.

I would expect Steve Keim to try to be aggressive at the trading deadline one way or another this year. If he thinks this 2017 team can make a legitimate run toward the Super Bowl, he will try to add talent at need positions. This is why he has been creating $16M in cap space. If the Cardinals continue to struggle, Keim will do all he can to get assets in return at the trading deadline for some of the veterans on the roster, including Larry Fitzgerald. The sentiment would be to give Larry his last chance at a ring, if it can't be in Arizona.

With a significant amount of cap space, the 2018 off-season should be wild and wooly for the Cardinals. This will be year 3...and if Keim believes Carson Palmer is the best chance to win a ring, he will stick with him. If Palmer falters this year or keeps contemplating retiirement, Keim will go all-out in 2018 in trying to sign or trade for a QB.

Regardless, next year's approach should look much more assertive and because of it, the 2018 roster is likely to look very different than the 2015 team that made a run for the Super Bowl. I would guess that fewer than 10 players from the Cardinals 2015 roster will be on the Cardinals' 2018 roster. That's a 3 year flip of 43+ players.

Good read Mitch. Thanks for the write up. Urban was saying in one of his articles that we have a little over $13m in cap space. I know we always leave some going in to the season in case of injuries.

Hey, bud. ALWAYS enjoy your insights. These are GREAT days to be a Cardinals fan. Especially when compared to the abject misery of the past. I would much rather be referred to in NFL circles as a "dark horse" and NOT a "dead horse."

Take Care, bud.

2018 is the beginning of a new era, and thus probably new multi-year plan, with the retirements of Larry and CP.

The new era is one in which Id like to focus more on OL and CB. I read that PP hasnt had a consistent #2 CB across from him since he was drafted. Thats awful. Fix it Keim. Either draft high or sign a big money #2 CB long term.

OL is to pave the way for David as he will be the centerpiece for the forseeable future. And we only need a serviceable game manager at QB to give him the ball ala Dak/Zeke in Dallas. Notice they have dominant Oline, I would like to have that same strategy here.

I think our OL is stellar and has been being built appropriately for now and for the future. if CP retires, we just need to plug in a decent QB and we will still be chugging along.

What I love about the OL is the depth -- we have never been this deep. Interesting too that Carson Palmer played his two best games (at SEA and at LA) with an OL of LT John Wetzel, LG Mike Iupati, C A.Q. Shipley, RB Evan Boehm and RT Earl Watford. This versus two of the better pass rushes in the NFL.

Sean Connery in Hunt for Red October says to Ryan "What books" and Jack Ryan answers with the title of a book he wrote and Connery says " I know this book, your conclusions were all wrong."

I'm not sure which one of us Connery and which is Ryan but here is my theory.

Keim is looking ahead 3 years each year to make sure the CAP and roster stay healthy and not coming up with a new 3 year plan every 3 years. Diche was drafted knowing that CC would most likely be moving on and his price tag would be crazy high.

My other thought is how much do teams typically churn their roster each year. My impression is that most teams turn over a bunch of players every year. The mass exodus this past year was mostly because SK did a masterful job of finding cheap talent that outplayed their contracts and hit big in FA. I expect this to be an ongoing plan like the Steelers and Ravens front offices have done for many years.

There's no chance Bucannon and Mathieu get cut unless they have injury plagued seasons. I suspect Iupati will be the first one to go though.

We still have enough money next season to extend Bucannon (lower his cap number for next season), Golden, and Johnson ESPECIALLY if Palmer retires.

We can also cut Bethea (3M) and Dawson (3M)

I also can't imaging that Gabbert is any part of the long term plan for starting qb. He's a replacement for Stanton, not Palmer.

Well, considering the QB situation is looking bleak for 2018 (and maybe 2017--fingers crossed for CP), I don't hold out much hope for this new iteration of the 3-year plan. Without a viable QB, that plan will be kaput.

I hear you...but I think Harry said it best...with RB David Johnson, an improving offensive line and a host of WR talent...the Cardinals can win with a "good" QB, not necessarily a great one. Carson Palmer couldn't win in Oakland (8-16 as a starter there) and his three winning seasons in Arizona exceed the two winning seasons he had in Cincinnati. Prior to coming to the Cardinals, Palmer only had 2 winning seasons in 9 years.

We're not going to win a Super Bowl with a nobody at QB next year. We reclaimed Palmer and almost got to the Super Bowl...but I have no faith he can lead us to the promised land in 2018, and little faith he can do it this year. Time is a tough opponent. And, couple that with our gross negligence on acquiring a QBOF, and the future isn't bright at the position. I don't have faith that we're going to suddenly, in one offseason, find our SB-winning QB. I hope you, and, more importantly, BASK, can show me otherwise :)

Stout---what's so fascinating to me is the thought of a quick-trigger, mobile QB in BA's system. Carson Palmer is neither, which is why i tend to agree with you. Imo, the best chance the Cardinals have with Palmer is for BA to tailor back his offense and cater it to Palmer's strengths which are play-action passes and shotgun 3 step drops with chip and RB protection and built in safety valves.

The QB I am most fascinated with for BA's system is Jimmy Garoppolo, and he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2018...although i think the Patriots will slap the f-tag on him so that, at the very least, the can trade him and get assets in return. That's OK, because Keim has traded with Beliichick before and I think BB would prefer to send JG to an NFC team.

With Garoppolo, BA's zero RB spreads would now be near impossible to defend the way JG makes split-send reads and gets the ball out quickly and on time. Plus, JG can bolt from the pocket when the pressure is hot and the first two reads are taken away.

I am also very intrigued by the addition of Blaine Gabbert because of his size, arm, smarts and mobility. He's never had a coach like BA, which is why I am anxious to see how he looks in the offense.

As for the draft...I love Jamar Jackson of Louisville. He's still learning the nuances of the QB position and needs to add weight strength, but he is electrifying.

I'd be intrigued with Garoppolo as well. We'll see if we can (or will want to) go get him. Gabbert doesn't interest me at all. He's a never-has-been, IMO, who never will be. As for the draft, I can't claim any knowledge. I usually don't get into that until at least the middle of the college football season. I'll have to keep an eye on Jackson.

IMO we are built to the point where even a marginal QB can get us to the playoffs. I'll clarify to that by marginal, I mean an alex smith/trent dilfer type or better, not a drew stanton type.

Getting into the playoffs is the name of the game, once there, anything can happen.

We didn't make the playoffs last season with Carson Palmer at QB, and would be fortunate to have maintained the same talent level into this season. This comment makes no sense.

Yes, one injury ravaged season with a depleted special teams unit defines everything..right.

We have a top tier OL, one of, if not the best RBs in the league and a very talented defense. We are built to make the playoffs, doesnt mean it will happen every year.

"Injury ravaged"? LOL. https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2017/2016-adjusted-games-lost Cards were 19th in adjusted games lost, down five spots from the year before.

Again, we had the same elements that you promoted here (although I don't believe that we're close to the Cowboys in terms of OL), with an above-average QB, and we still had a losing season.

The majority of our special teams starters were injured. Our offense and Defense were top ten while the ST unit was near last or last. With that unit improving from people not being injured anymore and more rookies to play, it fixes it.

We lost two games directly on special teams failures and they contributed to many other losses. We had almost no WR for the first half of the season, I could go on.

I dont really care what football outsiders say, This roster is built for the playoffs as long as we dont lose so many starters like we did on ST last year.

I think Alex Smith is more than a marginal QB, but maybe that's just me. If he was our back-up this year, I'd feel the team would still have a chance even if Palmer went out for most of the season. Smith isn't a superstar but he does the job, he does it dependably, and he does okay under pressure.

If the Cards signed him to replace Palmer at the end of the season, I'd be okay with that, too.

I guess I look at WB like:

Sucks
Marginal
Good
Great

I would put smith in marginal. I mean, he went an entire year without throwing a TD to a WR.

But he doesnt suck.

I would love nothing more than to have Jimmy G as our starting QB after CP retires. I would love him or Mahomes but there's no chance at PH now.

We didn't make the playoffs for several reasons. Palmer wasn't one imo. Receiving core was & ST. I feel our talent level overall is better this year than last. Willing to bet 10 games or better for the season.
