At RG, the most naturally talented player at that position is Cole Toner. It surprised me that BA & staff elected to play Tyler Boggs later on in the season, rather than Toner. The coaches claimed that Toner isn't strong enough yet. However, his pre-season performances belied that assessment. BA said himself that because of the limited number of practices during the season where they could hit in pads that they couldn't even see what Boggs could do during the week they inserted him into the starting lineup. Thus, they couldn't get a good assessment on Toner either.

I also think that John Wetzel is a stronger option at RG because of his bruising style. But, like Boehm he is not as strong in the finesse aspects of the guard position with regard to the requisite footwork, pulling and getting to the second level.
Good points Mitch. I would think by moving Boehm to center where he can learn to anchor the line and getting one of our young guys to step in the RG position. Between Toner, Wetzel and Boggs there has to be one of them that can step in or why have them on the roster? If the coaching staff is not happy with what they see bring in other players.

Why move Boehm to G when he is a natural C? We can always sign a vet G for depth if the FO is concerned.

it was once a common practice to have a young center play a few seasons at guard... it allowed him to learn the position from a more experienced player...as a guard watches the defensive front develop from nearly the same angle as the center... helps him learn the calls while also letting him adjust technique and physicality to match the nfl level of play

Arians and CP like Shipley, who now has a 2 yr deal, and Boehm did have a dozen games at guard in College.

Yes, but both Mathis and Jenkins were injury risks from the get-go. Mathis missed 4 starts with a bad ankle for the Broncos in 2015. And he said he spent the whole summer rehabbing a number of injuries, including the ankle -- and the ankle gave out early in his season with the Cardinals.

Jenkins was coming off a 2 year stint in Tampa Bay -- in which he only started 5 of 32 games. 16 games were lost in his first year to a torn pec.

The Cardinals hoped to get lucky --- with Mathis it was more realistic, but with Jenkins he clearly has been on the decline for years.
Yes, they needed better b/u plans especially at CB2 with Bethel down all pre season too.

You could take the position that the Cards had solid backup plans and did a yeoman job of executing them but were just hammered by the football-injury gods.

I don't mean to sound like a homer, but I think this is what was going on at the time. (Bleep happens).

Jeff---I think you are thinking just what BA&SK are thinking. But I worry that they are over-estimating the actual talent on the roster.
