I guess Gibby was showcasing Johnson by bringing him back up to the top of the lineup, not that it made a difference.

Well, I wanted him sent down to the Minors. I'll take Toronto. They say that the best trade benefits both teams. If this one helps the D'backs at all, it is worth it.

Especially if the 2-for-1 trade results in one of our .150 hitting minor leaguers masquerading as major leaguers being sent down.

The bottom line is that Kelly Johnson or Chris Young had to go to change the mindset of the team.

We traded one disappointing player for two dreadful players. Unless one of them hits that magic "change of scenery" point (and players rarely do), this isn't an upgrade at all. Hill and McDonald have an OPS+ (which corrects for league differences) of 58 and 71 respectively, compared to an 88 for Johnson. I'd like to be surprised, but this deal looks like tire spinning at best.

Don't you see, it changes the "mindset" of the team. This per the resident team psychologist, err....

I think this trade improves our defense, and it's not like Bloomquist has been tearing the cover off the ball lately.
With the way we're hitting (or the lack thereof) good defense is paramount.

Looks like Ransom was the one designated for assignment.

Mark Reynolds sent Kelly Johnson a text message saying, "Welcome to the big leagues." From one D'backs strikeout king to another.

If the NL is not the big leagues, both of them certainly did not take advantage of the inferior league. That's a good one, Reynolds!

Johnson said that GM Kevin Towers "would rather throw up three times a day after eating than have his team strike out a lot".

Y'hear that, Chris Young? One of these days, Mark Reynolds (.220 BAvg - 149 K's) and Kelly Johnson (.209 BAvg - 132 K's) might be sending you (.232 BAvg - 108 K's) the same text mail. So that the GM wouldn't have to throw up three times a day after watching all those popups.

There is an honor. All-League first team for popups, strikeouts and pathetic batting average, courtesy of our hometown team. :)

The best trade is the one that benefits both teams

Kelly Johnson is hitting .333 (11 for 33) for Toronto since the trade.

Aaron Hill is hitting .353 (12 for 34) for the D'backs. who also got a slick fielding backup shortstop in the deal.

Johnson and Hill indeed benefitted from a fresh start. And, from our perspective, so did the D'backs.

I'm amazed that Hill is playing as well as he is. I read & heard reports that he simply "lost it" and Toronto had no idea what to do. Saying that someone has lost the ability to be a major league baseball player is pretty extreme. So I'm surprised that he's tearing it up here in AZ.

Hopefully he doesn't lose it again and returns to his near MVP form.

As long as he doesn't fall into the D'backs SOAP syndrome -- Strike Outs And Popups.

Seriously, we don't need another .212 hitter batting second.

I have a really good friend that knows Hill, and he was telling me that Hill was hit in the head the year after his All-Star season, and that he had secretly mentioned that he just wanted to be traded so he could have a different hitters backdrop. Cause every time his eye would catch a ball that was coming in and passed the same spot on the wall, part of his mind would flinch thinking he was gonna get hit again. So maybe we lucked out and got a beast at 2B that just needed a different backdrop to hit against.

Interesting. Baseball is 90% mental. Makes sense.
