I remember watching one of those pre-Whiz games against the Rams with my Rams fan buddy. Of course him being a Rams fan, he was fiercely loyal to Kurt and always insisted that he wasn't washed up, though he did look really washed up at that point.

It was the last drive of the game, Warner had the chance to drive the Cardinals down the field to win the game. I actually bet my friend $10 that Warner would fumble and blow the game. Needless to say, I won that bet.

Not gonna lie, I was at that game and tried to start a "We want Leinart" chant. IIRC Matt started the next game.

Well, I'm just going to have to conclude that it's nothing more than coincidence and that Whiz had nothing to do with a SB win by Pittsburgh; the one and only Cards presence in the final game; Warner's return from the scrap heap and the evident improvement in play by Rivers with Whiz as his coordinator.

Denny Green would have been a great GM his evaluation of talent was unbelievable.

I was going to post that I would have loved to have seen what Whiz and CP would have done. Don't get me wrong I loved having BA as our coach, just it's something I have pondered.

People rip Whisenhunt saying he’s trash without Warner...can someone name many QBs who failed with Whisenhunt that ended up being good elsewhere?

Guys like Kolb, Anderson and Skelton were scrubs everywhere not just with the Cardinals. Mariota is about the only other one I can think of who isn’t a complete scrub and even he hasn’t shown he’s anything special.

He needed some talent to work with at QB and never had it except for Warner.

Yep there's a reason Whiz ended his career as a HC 4-31 between the last season with the cards and his time with the titans. Offenses post Warner were atrocious. He would be a bad hire.

The only thing that improved Warner's fumbling were the gloves. Once he could hang onto the ball, he was back to his MVP self. I know Warner got the idea to try them from watching Roethlisberger but I don't know if that was at Whisenhunt's urging. The dots are there to connect but I don't think Whisenhunt coached the fumbling out of Warner.

Warner broke his thumb as a Ram and it never healed right and he lost strength and/or dexterity and the ability to securely grip the ball. From '02 to '06 it was the same thing for him. He could still throw and read a defense but he couldn't stop fumbling. On snaps, when he got hit, even when he didn't get hit. As a Ram, a Giant and as a Cardinal. He lost his job 3 different times because of the inexplicable fumbles. When he mopped up the 15th game of '06 and started the last game of '06 when Leinart got hurt, he'd adopted the gloves and he was instantly back.

Many don't put much credence into the gloves theory but it seems very obvious to me. Those tacky, diamond handler gloves kept the ball from squirting out of his hands and he was able to stay on the field. None of that was Whisenhunt. But Whisenhunt does deserve credit for playing the best player. Not all coaches would have gone with the washed-up vet over the first round draft pick.
