Why would anyone in their right mind give up a "middle round pick" for him, right now?

PFT says this:

It had become increasingly clear that a divorce was needed. Cimini devoted a recent item to Kendall's history of using painkillers to allow himself to play. Though Kendall stopped short of saying that he wouldn't continue to use medications in order to be able to suit up and perform, a source with knowledge of the situation made it clear to us that Kendall would not be using any pain medication if the team didn't adjust his contract.

That is about as crazy of a threat as I have ever seen. What a moron.

what i want to know is this - if he was such a big pain in the arse with the jets, as he was here, and he's now older, why do the jets get a draft pick for him and we got nothing? how does that always happen with this team.

and now a bit of sunshine - i disagree with some of the koolaiders (gasp! shock!), but in a POSITIVE way. i saw that mitch slammed clancy. and while i'm not a fan, i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt until the season starts. you can't judge a defense until the bullets are real. vanilla schemes mean nothing.

i put a lot of that on Denny, who wanted to make a statement to the rest of the team by cutting Kendall outright. That being said, you'd think the GM's job is to level the coach's passion play and try to better the team, but whatever.

Agreed, I mean that old story about Jim Otto after football is just a myth right?

I realize it's an unspoken thing but expecting players to shoot up on painkillers to play every week has always puzzled me. It's like fans forget
NFL players are actually human and not robots.

I think Denny and his pie had something to do with it.

Completely off topic but:

That brings me to the question. What is worse? Pain killers or HGH. Pain killers just mask the pain causing the injuries to continue to get worse so when theses guys are 45 they can not get out of bed and have to use canes to walk. HGH helps the body heal and get stronger. Things that make you go hmmmmm…………..

Nope completely agree I've always wondered why it's against the rules to
take steroids but completely legal to shoot the players up with painkillers.

Who was the player that severely injured his foot, shot up with cortezone so he couldn't feel the pain, and played on it? I remembering seeing a feature that said he did so much damage doing this that they later had to amputate the foot. Can't remember his name though...

Russ' post reminded me of that movie as well. That and poor Earl Campbell.

Yep, not that I defend Rickey but Rickey Wlliams says his entire outlook on football changed after he met Earl Campbell. Earl had to use a cane and lean on someone to walk out on the field to shake his hand. Rickey said he vowed right then and there to never let the game do to him what it did to Campbell.

I would be surprised if Barry Sanders didn't quit, at least partially, for the same reasons.

I don't blame him at all, the Dolphins were running Ricky Williams over 300+ carries per season. Its the same for Larry Johnson, he held out because the Chiefs are only going to run the ball, he is going to get all of the carries one season after he had over 300 touches. He is 27 playing in the last year of his rookie contract. There is a decent chance that he may get injured this year and there is a better chance that he won't be as productive as he was two years ago, he should get as much as he can while he is still valuable to the team.

To the skins for a middle-round pick.

"The New York Jets ended months of acrimony and bickering with starting left guard Pete Kendall on Thursday, trading the disgruntled 11-year veteran to the Washington Redskins for an undisclosed middle-round draft choice."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2988171

"Kendall's agent, Just Do It, had this to say: 'Pete was tired of always giving so much of himself to the team and getting nothing in return. We had discussions about how the world owes him and he has no reason to be loyal to anyone for any reason. Pete feels that if things aren't going exactly the way he wants them to go, then it's time to move on, and I agree.'"

Hey they got a 4-5th rounder.
Man they robbed the Skins. We didn't get crap for him. Oh wait, we did get crap for him. Lots of it for releasing him.
I was thinking just that.

Also - here's a question for us to ponder. At what point does a smart guy who speaks his piece but does his job fall into the category of "latrine lawyer?"

This speaks to the phenominom of NFLPA reps who regularly get released before their time, ownership's ability to tolerate frank commentary from the riffraf, the need for teams to stock their offensive line with smart players etc. etc.

I liked Kendall. I thought he was getting screwed by the Jets (including the petty stuff like being housed in the rookie dorm). But there are usually 2 sides to every story and I can't help but wonder where legitimate comments morph into mouthiness. Then too, although you can't argue with the success of the old school "shut up and just play football" approach, I can't help but wonder whether teams who adhere to this aren't likely to become dinosaurs W&L-wise with regard to the proper care and feeding of modern day football players.

Just thought it worthwhile to open this up for debate.
