Clancy is a good signing. Solid player will help stop the run. Also got him for a decent salary.

Excellent signing. He is the prototypical NT for this scheme.

It's a start. Because guys that big tend to wear down during games, we need one (preferably 2) more guys equal in talent to Clancy to put into rotation.

From AZcardinals.com:

The Arizona Cardinals Football Club has agreed to a four-year deal with defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy, subject to the passing of a physical exam. In accordance to team policies the details of the contract have not been disclosed.

“He is ideal for us because he is a versatile tackle,” commented Cardinals Vice President of Football Operations Rod Graves. “He can play both nose and under tackle. He is very strong and quick so adding him to our defensive line gives us the opportunity to be much stronger up front.”

Clancy (6-1, 305) was originally a 3rd round pick in the 2000 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The University of Mississippi product played five seasons with the Steelers appearing in 54 games. During his tenure with the Steelers he recorded 30 tackles, in addition to having three post season appearances.

Following the 2004 season, the six-year NFL veteran moved on and tested the free agent market, and signed with the New York Giants on March 11, 2005 as an unrestricted free agent. During the 2005 season Clancy played in 16 games for the Giants recording 2 sacks and 37 tackles.

“Anytime we can get a player with experience I always think that affects our entire football team," Graves said. "The way Clancy plays the game with his intensity and his effort will not only directly our play on the field but hopefully rub off on some of the other players around him. Adding him will also help that defensive front in particular how we use Darnell Dockett. It will allow us to have those guys in at nose and under tackle and provide us with the versatility to do different things with both of those guys in the line up.”

I think we're jumping the gun on Davis not returning, it wouldn't suprise me if he tested the waters, found no takers and came back for a one year deal. Wouldn't hurt to have him in the rotation spelling Clancey along with Moore.

Sounds as if we may use Clancy as an UT spelling Dockett in short yardage or run situations along with someone else at the Slant NT spot.

What about running a 3-4 type D with Berry-Clancy-Okeafor on the LOS, Dansby-Darling-Dockett-Huff as LBs and our starting DBs. This frees Dockett from having to deal with blockers and gives us some meat in the box on obvious running downs....

It sounds like it doesn't it? Could also look at subbing in Antonio Smith at DE or UT in run situations.

Switch Okeafor and Dockett and that might be an occasional look. DD may be quick for a DT but he's still a 300 lb DL.

 This is what I was thinking. Okeafor is too light for a 3-4 DE, and Dockett is pretty large to be a 3-4 OLB.

Glad to see the Cards took my advice ;) and signed Clancy. I be really happy if they could still hang on to R. Davis for the rotation. But even if not we just upgraded the DT position.

The Cardinals signed DT K Clancy. For what its worth, PFW had DT R Davis ranked ahead of Clancy. It was an aggressive signing, but I am not sure we have upgraded our DT spot.

I like the signing.

It shows that we will not just wait for our guys to sign, that the team identified a good replacement, went after him, and got him. Were we the first team Clancy visited?

This whole "aggressive approach thingy" the Cards are using is great!

I agree, it seems we have changed. Not only signing guys early but announcing it too. We used to wait until we had a group of signings.

Clancy and Davis are not truly interchangeable. Davis occupies a great deal more space and holds up better against the run. Clancy, a a previous post noted, would seem more appropriate to rotate with Dockett in running situations. Also, Dockett played poorly last season and Clancy may provide both an option and some motivation.

Davis occupies more space and holds up better against the run? Really, Harry, come on...Davis was always abysmal against the run.

I saw a few Giant games last year and was impressed with how Clancy held up at the point of attack. I have no idea where all of this praise for Davis comes from but the guy was pushed around pretty easily when I watched him. I like the signing. Glad we did it.

Personally, I never considered Davis a guy who occupies a lot of space.

Wasn't that the logic we used when we signed Fredrickson instead of Jamir Miller?
