For the third time in the last four years, Kent State men's basketball is headed to the postseason.
The Golden Flashes will travel to Olean, N.Y., to face St. Bonaventure in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Kent State (22-11), is 9-3 since the start of February. The Flashes defeated Western Michigan 73-66 in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference Tournament before losing 72-64 to Miami in a semifinal Friday.
The Bonnies (22-11) also won a game in their conference tournament before losing in the Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinals. St. Bonaventure has proven tough to beat at the Reilly Center, where it is 12-3.
The Bonnies have played one MAC team this year, beating Buffalo by 10 at home. They also have won 14 of their 21 matchups against the Kent State, but the teams haven't played each other since 2003.
Like Kent State, St. Bonaventure has very stable leadership with coach Mark Schmidt in his 18th season at the helm. The Bonnies made headlines this season when they brought in famed ESPN basketball insider Adrian Wojnarowski to be their general manager. St. Bonaventure last played in the postseason in 2021-2022 — also in the NIT.
Kent State last played in the postseason in 2023 when it won the MAC title to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The Flashes also played in The Basketball Cup the previous year.
This will be the eighth postseason appearance in Rob Senderoff's 14 years as Flashes coach, but first in the NIT. Kent State last competed in the NIT in the three-year Geno Ford era, during which the Flashes twice played in the NIT and once in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. They advanced to the NIT quarterfinals in 2010-2011.
The NIT is a 32-team, five-round tournament with the semifinals and finals taking place in the Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
