LEXINGTON — Down 11 points in the second quarter, the Bowling Green High School boys basketball team chipped away, forced overtime and advanced to the final day of the season.
Luke Idlett scored 26 points and football star Deuce Bailey added 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Purples to an 80-74 victory over Ashland Blazer in Friday’s quarterfinals of the UK Healthcare Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
Bowling Green (30-6) reached the state semifinals for the first time since winning the championship in 2017 and will face the Jeffersontown-South Oldham winner at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Zander Carter, a Liberty University signee, posted 33 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists to lead Ashland Blazer (24-8).
The Tomcats led 30-19 midway through the second quarter and held a 65-59 edge after Carter’s basket with 3:57 left in regulation.
But Bowling Green scored the next six points, with Idlett’s steal and layup tying the score at 65 with 48 seconds left. Carter sank two free throws to give the Tomcats a 67-65 edge before Bailey, a Missouri State football signee, scored in the paint to force overtime.
Bowling Green dominated the extra period. Braylon Banks’ 3-point play at the 1:37 mark gave the Purples a 70-68 lead and sparked a 9-0 run that put it away.
Kadyn Carpenter chipped in 17 points for the Purples, which won its second straight overtime game in the Sweet 16 after beating Adair County 52-51 in Wednesday's first round.
