Kernels get first races of season in at Dan Lennon indoor meet

Mar. 18—VERMILLION, S.D. — Some of the Mitchell High School track and field team was able to get some competition at the DakotaDome on Monday in the Class A Dan Lennon indoor track meet at the University of South Dakota.

Among the Kernel leaders, Hunter Patton was a fifth-place finisher in the 800-meter run (2:05.86). In the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay, the Mitchell squad of Carter Lee, Mason Kempf, Patton and Alexier Padilla (3:52.87) finished third, and the 4x400-meter relay of Samari Wright, Padilla, Miguel Vizcarra and Patton was fifth (3:46.12). Kellan Odell was seventh in the boys long jump, clearing 20 feet.

For the Kernel girls, Lainee Forst, Ava Prunty, Ryan Keys, Keyana Kelley were fifth in the 4x400-meter relay (4:23.44). Taylor DeJong was sixth in the girls shot put with a top throw of 35 feet, 8 inches.

Mitchell has two more indoor meets on the schedule, including March 29 at the annual Eastern South Dakota Conference indoor meet at South Dakota State University in Brookings, followed by the Dakota Wesleyan High School Open on April 1. The indoor meet times and marks do not count for state meet qualification at the end of the season.
