Marte's consecutive extra-base-hit at-bats were, of course, a (good) extreme. Just as his bad start this season was a (bad) extreme. It has leveled him out as a solid infielder.
Whether his ongoing hitting is solid enough for 2B remains to be seen. Which is why I have been proposing that he start at SS against righty pitchers, against whom Ahmed is pathetic.
And when lefties start, as a switch hitter, Marte could move to 2B to give Descalso a rest, unless and until the D-backs come up with a younger, talented 2B.
Ahmed is an outstanding fielding SS. And a solid hitter against lefty pitchers. But Nick is a hitting liability in most games (those against righties) and Marte is a good fielding SS.
We have seen Ahmed benched against some righties lately. But he is still clearly the regular SS.
As long as Owings is not in the mix. He is no better than Owings as a hitter. Able to play 2B-SS-3B-LF-CF-RF -- very flexible. Able to hit well at any of those positions -- no. Except maybe SS, where he is a weak fielder.
