Kevin Kruger is leaving Arizona State for Nevada-Las Vegas, where he will play for his father, UNLV coach Lon Kruger.

“This has been a really tough decision,'' Kevin Kruger said Friday. “But this is a chance to be back with my family.

“ I considered all my options, and I decided I want to play for my father in my final year.''

Kruger, who was projected to start in ASU's backcourt next season as a fifth-year senior, said he made the decision after learning that the NCAA had passed a new rule, Proposal 2005-54, about 10 days ago.

Under the new rule, Kruger can transfer and play immediately because he earned his undergraduate degree in four years and still has one year of eligibility left.

Kruger, who sat out his freshman season as a redshirt,. graduated last week with a major in justice studies. He led ASU in scoring last season, averaging 15 points and 39 minutes a game.

Kruger, who was All-Pac-10 honorable mention last season, said his decision has nothing to do with the departure of Rob Evans, who was told in March that he would not be back be back for a ninth season as ASU coach. Kruger and Evans were close.

Hurts ASU this year as they have no capable Princeton offense PG unless Atuahene miraculously develops a jumpshot. It's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things as this was always going to be looked at as a rebuilding year for ASU Basketball anyways although squeaking into an NIT bid could have done wonders for the program's perception.

The biggest question I have is whether ASU fans will now admit that Kruger is not as good as Steve Kerr now that he's a Runnin' Rebel and not a Devil?

Someone on Bruinzone said that ASU just got Derek Glasser who was headed to USC but changed his mind. He's a PG, his HS coach is now an assistant at ASU.

Glasser might be a PG, but we're talking about a guy who didn't receive a major conference scholarship offer replacing a fifth year senior who likely would have been an All Conference selection and a perfect fit in the Princeton offense. This definitely hurts ASU this year although it might help out with Malik Story down the road, James Harden is already a lock for ASU.

Kruger was going to be a perfect fit for ASU's new offense. This will hurt ASU more than some think. He was basically the only outside threat and if the Devils don't hit their outside shots more consistently, they will have a hard time playing catchup with a more slow-down offense.

Nobody's arguing that it won't hurt ASU this year, but it will have little effect long term. The upcoming season was for rebuilding anyways and now it gives more younger guys time to get acclimated to Sendek's system. However ASU still needs to bring in someone in the 2007 class to solidify the PG position even with this latest signing.

Story is verbally committed to USC I thought?
Who knows with USC though, talk about a ever changing situation.

The funny thing is that NOBODY said that the 2 players were equals...I said that they had very similar games...Do you think that they play very differently on the court?

I wish Kruger luck playing for his father, and I'm very happy to take a recriut away from USC, especially since one of my old roommates graduated from ISU, and he claimed the guy would be the best coach in the Pac.

BTW, Sendeck doesn't run the typicall "princeton offense"...You could read morons from the AZ Republic, and they'd even know that fact.

You're half correct...Kruger was a perfect fit for any offense, but the FACT of the matter is that NCST scored more points than ASU, even with the slowed down O.
