Lions Smith: 'We will definitely make the playoff's'
On his personal blog, Smith34.com, Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith(notes) predicted, no wait, promised the Lions will make the NFL Playoffs in 2009. It makes you wonder, did he watch the video tape?

"I won't make a prediction about how many games we're going to win, but I will say this: We will definitely make the playoffs this season.

"Believe it or not we weren't far off last year. Almost every game we could have won, we were one play or one player short. Except for Tennessee on Thanksgiving, they just came out and beat us to sleep. They manhandled us, but nobody else did.''

The Lions weren't far off? They were 0-16.

what else is he supposed to say?

"we're gonna do worse than last year, and I know you are laughing, but we will."

Chad Pennington said the Dolphins were a 10-win team last year and he was right. They play the Rams, 49ers and Seahawks so that's a guaranteed 3 wins already.

No way they go from 0 wins to 9 or 10 in one season. I could see them getting 5 or 6 wins though, thats still a significant improvement.

I disagree whole heartedly. You really think the Lions beating those three teams is a guarantee?

the Lions are currently calling all the potential playoff teams to see if they can buy 53 great seats to attend the event :)

seriously, I could see them winning seven games but losing has everything to do with finishing and knowing how to close out a game. If Smith's reason for going to the playoffs is based on playing it close in all the games, then every NBA team could claim the same since basketball is always a close score fest but it has nothing to do with getting close...it is about getting ahead no matter the amount of points and holding on, the Lions clearly showed last year that they cannot do that

Crazier things have happened. I think they should be a 6 win team pretty easily next year, their defense and offense have gotten a lot of help. They were middle of the pack in their scoring average, but their D was atrocious. You can't win football games giving up an average of I think 32 PPG. Calling a playoff birth might seem nuts, but you have to look at it from Smith and the rest of the team's perspective. You're never going to respond to a "How many games do you think you'll win?" type of question with "Oh I don't know, 2 or 3 at best.." At least he's got some motivation and confidence moving forward. If Stafford isn't a bust that offense is going to very solid (if their line can block) with Megatron/Smith/Pettigrew.

You can't say "no way" to any team in the NFL.

The Dolphins went from 1 win to a playoff birth.
The Cardinals went from 1 playoff win in 10 years to a super-bowl birth.

In today's NFL, with a razor's edge of difference between teams, there's no reason the Lions can't make some noise.

Making crazy promises he can't keep to give hope to blind followers? I sense this kid has a future in politics.

none of us around here should laugh them off, but making those kinds of promises usually comes back to haunt you.

It wasn't long ago that we ourselves were in a position of having to talk ourselves into getting excited for games.

How quickly we forget.

Reminds me of when Paul Westphal guaranteed we'd beat the Lakers best of 5 when we were down 0-2. Ah, the good ol' days. Heck, we did do that...maybe the Lions will pull a rabbit out of their hat as well.

Um...Is anybody forgetting the Falcons or am I the only one who still remembers that they sucked and then made the playoffs last year. Cinderella stories can happen from time to time and just last year the Falcons go from having the 3rd overall pick to the playoffs while the ARIZONA CARDINALS (who have more top 10 draft picks than pretty much anybody else in history) go to the superbowl. The Lions going to the playoffs this year is not that far fetched.

LOL

Westphal's guarantee: The team with the best record in the NBA would come back to beat the 8th seeded-barely-made-the-playoff-Lakers who had no business even being "in the series." They jumped out to a 2-0 lead and were in the end only one missed Byron Scott 3-pointer away from winning the short series...which would have been one of the biggest upsets EVER.

So - you're really comparing the Lions - the NFL's worst team last year - to the NBA team with the best record overall that year? :nono:

62-20 > 0-16

I knew some Laker fan would come & crap on what I said. The Suns were down 0-2, and odds were against them doing it. Don't read so deeply, geez. It wasn't a slam against the Lakers.

Nothing to do with Lakers vs. Suns. Just a bad comparison.

You have Team A (62-20) vs. Team B (39-23).

Top-seed vs. an eighth seed.

Team A is highly favored. Even down 2 games to none - Team A is highly favored.

At that time no #8 seed had EVER advanced in the NBA Playoffs.

The guarantee was not that much of a leap when put into perspective...

You're comparing that short series to an 0-16 team maybe winning 8 or 9 games the following season in the NFL?

Apple and oranges, IMHO.

Prediction history of Kevin Smith:

He talked hopefully about a Cinderella run to the Super Bowl before his rookie season in 2008.

End result: 0-16.

He has yet to win a single NFL game.

I understood the first time you explained it why you felt it was a bad comparison.

I never said it was a comparison. I said it reminded me of that, which it did.
