your thoughts
That and 2-cents will get you a cigar.

Once again, risking ridicule by asking a question without knowing the answer in advance - has anyone compared Kiper's early mocks with the actual draft each year?

My hypothesis is that Mel's early mocks and actual results seldom bear any recognizable resemblance to one another.

It's not because Mel and other gurus aren't good at what they do. It's just that lots of things can happen to both players and NFL teams between mid-Jan. and Draft Day - new coaches/GM's, FA pickups, injuries, draft-day trades, changes in player-ratings etc.

Let me put it this way - If the draft were held today, Mel's mock would probably be as good as anybody's. But the draft won't be held for 3 months.

his credibility is not so much based on his mock draft prognostications, but rather, his scouting of the players, knowledge of their abilities, knowledge of the nfl teams, and his incredible teflon hair.

Not only that, but Kiper has much respect in the college ranks. He is one of only afew of the actual scouts who get out to spring games, summer practices, etc etc .

Not only that but he comes prepared. Knows the players names, stats, measurements etc.

Like him or hate him but he is very good at what he does.

Just seems whenever he goes out on a limb and predicts what a player will do in the NFL he is wrong 75% of the time.

I think he puts these Mocks out this early b/c everyone wants to see them. I mean realistically no one can predict the drfat this early right?

Too many smoke screens, the combines arent over yet, hell the senior bowl isnt over yet.

I think predicting the player is tough, but where Kiper is really goos is his analysis of players, strengths weaknesses, etc

No...what was it? Bill Tobin said..."Mel Kiper?...Who the hell is Mel Kiper". Maybe Ditka made a referance after the big Ricky deal for all NO PICKS.

He criticized the Colts for drafting Trev Alberts fifth overall in 1994. Colts GM Bill Tobin responded by saying, "Who the hell is Mel Kiper? My mailman knows more about the draft than he does."

sorry...

Mike Ditka???...Age does weird things to the mind...especially mine.

It was Bill Polian!
"After the Indianapolis Colts grabbed linebacker Trev Alberts with the No. 5 pick in 1994, Kiper was suspicious. He confessed those concerns to Colts General Manager Bill Polian, who offered this rebuttal: "Who the hell is Mel Kiper? Has he ever put on a jock before?" "

Kiper,

I used to order his mag all the time. 10+ years ago I called to place my order and Mel hizself answers the phone. I gave him my CC and address, and while he running things through I mentioned that Jeff Lageman had made the pro-bowl for the Jets. (Mel blasted the Jets for taking him in the 1st round when he could of been had in the second. New Yawkers flamed Mel wrongly as anti-Lageman)

We got into a long discussion about reaches, and trading down and still getting your guy. Mel was great, just as knowledgable, intense and fast talking as on TV. I didn't get the job I asked for though.

Kiper is overrated. His mocks are annually the worst out there. He has been wrong on so many players making it in the nfl that he would be long gone if not for the hype and his "act".

Eh, they keep track of that stuff. He's usually pretty solid.
RLakin beat him last year though.

Part of it is Kiper puts out the most detailed, and the most current draft stuff. Most other experts don't put out draft ratings before, during and after the college season, at most they do one before, and one after. Kiper constantly updates his.

So yes if you look preseason 2 years ago you won't see Carson Palmer near the top of his list, he went #1, so that's a "miss" but by midseason Palmer was rocketing up Kiper's list and he had him rated #1 just like most by draft time.

He's had some well documented misses, and some less documented hits, remember he absolute panned our pick of Tom Knight, reach, better athlete than player, and he even said he played too soft and was ALWAYS nicked up in college. Kiper absolutely NAILED that pick.

He's not Nostradamus but he's pretty good and as others said he really does his homework, he's not one of those guys who you hear on Saturdays every week calling 3-4 guys in each game "can't miss 1st round pick in the NFL this year".

Kiper also defended the Card's pick of Eric Swann. We picked him high (6th or 8th) and everybody was flabbergasted. Kiper stated Swann had great size, quickness and strenth and certainly had as much potential as other recent D-line picks. It would of been very easy for Kiper to jump on the anti-card bandwagon and critisize another blown Cardinal pick, but he stuck his neck out. You got to respect that.
