How do they have a midlevel exception? How are they going to fix this team?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2533265

A month ago, Isiah Thomas said he was "very comfortable" with the state of the New York Knicks' roster. Evidently "comfort" is only a temporary state of being.

On Friday, the Knicks offered Washington Wizards restricted free agent Jared Jeffries their mid-level exception, a five-year deal worth around $30 million. The Wizards will have seven days to match the offer once the team officially receives the paperwork.

"We have not received an offer, and if or when we do, we will have a week to explore all our options to determine our course of action," Wizards president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld told the New York Post.

Jeffries, listed as a guard/forward, played shooting guard, small forward, power forward and even center for the Wizards last year. The fourth-year player out of Indiana averaged 6.4 points per game and 4.9 rebounds while playing 25.4 minutes.

The Knicks already have four other small forwards -- David Lee, Quentin Richardson, Jalen Rose and first-round draft pick Renaldo Balkman -- but at 6-foot-11, Jeffries provides a different look for the team.

"We recognize they have a right to match," Jeffries' agent Andy Miller told the New York Times. "But hopefully, they take into consideration some of the human factors of it. In Jared's mind, he'd be better suited to playing in New York and for the Knicks."

Last season, New York stumbled to a 23-59 record -- second-worst in the NBA and equaling the most losses in club history. On June 22, the team fired coach Larry Brown just one season into a five-year deal worth a reported $50 million.

Thomas, who also serves as the Knicks' GM, replaced Brown. In his only other NBA coaching stint, Thomas went 131-115 in three seasons with the Indiana Pacers.

I think that everyone gets a midlevel exception each year regardless of cap space (or is it every other year?).

Every team that is over the cap gets the MLE every year. Teams under the cap do not get the MLE.

A few days ago someone asked about David Lee and I said I didn't think he was available. If they get Jeffries that might change.

That was me. I think his numbers are pretty solid except for his FT%. Ouch.

Has our TE expired yet? Any chance we could get David Lee for it? I don't know his value.

Our TE expires August 18. We could get Lee (his contract his low enough) but don't know if the Knicks are trying to keep him or trade him

scoutmasterdave, "Every team that is over the cap gets the MLE every year. Teams under the cap do not get the MLE."

Its more complicated than that. In essense every team gets the MLE every year, but they have to choose between using the MLE and using capspace. The reason for that is fairly obvious - if you were 1 dollar under the cap you'd have zero room to sign anyone while if you were over the cap you'd have the MLE to work with. Hardly fair, right? This way everyone has at least the MLE amount to work with every year.

Amen. If we don't get Boris locked up this year, it might be hard next year.

During that draft I wanted the Suns to pick Jeffries over Amare... :slap:

That's not a bad contract for Jeffries. Everyone has been getting overpaid. Aren't the Knicks way over the cap though? They need to get rid of some players. I heard they were trying to trade Q but no one is interested. :)

If there was some way to get rid of Q's huge contractual obligation, I wouldn't mind having him back. Yell, I know he whiffed in the final playoff game against the Spurs. I just thought he brought something to the table for the Suns and he would be better than EP.

Also I know he has a longer contact than KT and overall much much more costly and it's not going to happen. However, I'm still trying to figure out a way to give NY some payback over that Q for KT fiasco with the first round pick. If the Suns could only get something really good out of NY attached. :)

Anyway, I don't think any player deserves the fate of playing in NY.

I loved that KT for Q trade. Q was so inconsistent, he only made his shots for half of the regular season and he just didn't show up at all in any of the playoff games. KT was great for us this year. I'd sign Q for $3 million a year but anything else would just be too much. Eddie House was almost as good for us and he got less than a million.

KT and now Banks as the back-up>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Q and Nate

I wonder how much interest the Suns had in Jeffries at $3.7m. I know the Spurs were interested at the beginning of the FA season.

Anyway, in exchange for $30m, Jeffries threw his career on the pyre. He's going to have a very tough time beating out David Lee in the future, to say nothing of Channing Frye, and once he falls out of the rotation, you can pretty much write him off for the next four years or so.

The Knicks don't give away assets in little tiny deals where it's obvious they're getting hammered. You need to entice them with a grand vision, the chance to acquire a player who looks like he might be a vital contributor, some time in the nebulous future.

The only way for the Suns to get their foot in the door with Isiah is Leandro Barbosa, and if they do that, they better be leaving with a hell of a lot more than their own #30 pick from two years ago.

It seems Q and KT both had the same problem for the Suns... neither showed up for the Suns in the playoffs (although at least Q played). :sarcasm:

Seriously, if the Knicks bought out Q's contract, I would like to see him back on the Suns roster. It seems like on this Board I may be the only one. Of course I liked Steven Hunter and Eddie House as well. Maybe I tend to remember the good things about certain players that I like or maybe I just like rooting for the underdog. I'm not sure.

I wouldn't mind having Hunter over Marks or signing House to the minimum just because but Q just ticked me off too much. He got my hopes up with that 12, 3-pointer game but him not showing up really hurt in the playoffs. And I remember that long stretch at the beggining of the season were he couldn't make anything.
