Arizona State coach Dirk Koetter showed in his first news conference of the season that Thursday's opener against Texas-El Paso is not the only thing that has him fired up.

Koetter grabbed the moment Monday to respond to what he felt has been a recruiting attack. Koetter has repeatedly fielded inquiries over the disparity between UA's 14 commitments and ASU's one. The schools rarely have gone head to head on anyone besides Peoria Centennial back Terry Longbons, who committed to UA.

Apparently, Scottsdale Chaparral coach Ron Estabrook's quote in Friday's Republic was the last straw. Estabrook said: "They're making ASU look real silly," in reference to UA.

It's funny how people can so easily say they were taken out of context. I don't think the reporter was taken out of context...

It's about time to cut bait with this guy.
Stoops is no joke, and he's going to dominate a stiff like Koetter in recruiting (nevermind the X & O part). The longer ASU waits, the more difficult it's going to be to compete with UofA. I hate to say it, because I think UofA blows goats, but it's the truth.

I agree.

Me thinks Koetter is focusing on the wrong thing just days before the season opener.

This is a huge game...really a must win for the Sun Devils. If they lose to UTEP, then they will be limping into Evanston for Northwestern which could get ugly.

While UTEP was 2-10 last year, they are returning 19 starters this year so it will at minimum be an experienced team. I think they will be jacked up since it is Price's first game back coaching

As a side note, to those watching the game on TV, Northwestern is on at the same time against TCU so flip over to see what the Devils will be facing the next week.

This ASU v UTEP game has all the marking for an upset.

Koetter needs to be worried about keeping his job and not what some HS coach is saying.

I agree with most everything you said AZCB34 except for one thing. UTEP is no good. Arizone (yes that Arizona) beat UTEP 42-7 last year.

If ASU loses to UTEP, which I find extremely unlikely, they may as well fire Koetter after the game because there's little chance they'll be able to beat any of their next ten opponents.

ASU should make a bowl this year, unfortunately USC, Cal, and Oregon (and possibly Oregon St. and Washington St.) will be better than them and I wonder if a six or seven win season will save Dirk's job.

PS - I'm throwing $20 on UTEP covering not because I think UTEP will win, only because Mike Price will have his team prepared, versus Koetter whose ASU teams always start out like crap.

I have no faith after last year, we could be decent, but it seems much more likely that this team rolls over and sucks, just like most of their fans.

I don't actually believe UTEP will win but merely this has the makings of a possible upset.

UTEP is returning experience, their coach will have them ready and jacked up to play, Price is, IMO a better coach than Koetter, Koetter almost seems distracted right now (perception) and the heat will not matter much to the Miners. I believe ASU will prevail but let's just say I would be the least shocked person here if ASU lost this one.

MaoTosi, The Devils AD has stated Koetter will be the coach next year so unless the bottom completely falls out this year, Dirk will be back next year. Looking at the schedule, 6-5 seems about right, maybe 7-4...unless they play lethargic football.

Losing Oliver, to me, is a killer for this team. He is probably the 2nd most important player on this team next to Walter.

I was thinking about taking UTEP also but Koetter is going to do everything in his power to run up the score. I still don't know if they're going to cover but just the thought of a coach wanting to win big is enough to scare me away from that bet. Go Devils!

Mackovic got a similar vote of confidence about two weeks before we sent his sorry ass packing. I'm guessing the only reason Dirk's getting backed up by the AD is the fact that they cannot fire him due to financial restraints. The fact remains that Gene Smith does not have as much pull as the big-time alumni boosters at ASU. If the Sun Devils start the year 1-5 (which is not out of the realm of possibility), then you'll probably get a situation similar to what led to Mackovic's firing where a huge alumni wrote a check to the school to buy out his contract as they could not afford to.

If this is indeed what ASU ends up claiming, that will be the biggest load of crap ever.

They'll never admit that, but it's no secret that the ASU athletic department is swimming in red ink, they were even supposed to stop having fireworks during the game to save money. So unless a wealthy alum steps up and buys out Koetter's contract, he's not going anywhere because the Arizona Board of Regents would never approve such an expensive coaching change.

Who will they balme it on now that the dispute with the Cardinals is resolved?

Something about coaches out of Youngstown, OH... Not to be taken lightly.

I totally disagree that Koetter shouldn't be worried about what HS coaches are saying about his recruiting.
I think he should have his ears Wide Open to what they're saying.

Koetter may not have to worry long about what those HS coaches are saying if he cannot start winning...I guess that is my point. I would agree it is important he acknowledge (internally) what they are saying and deal with it but his top priority HAS to be winning. If you are winning, generally speaking recruiting becomes alot easier, no?

The ace for Stoops is the fact that Koetter's seat is getting warmer which of course puts a strain on recruiting. Why commit to a school whose coach may be gone within the next season or so when you can go 100 miles south to a school whose coach is locked for the next 5 years.

lol, looks like you lost 20 bucks. 32 points beats a 25 predicted point coverage. Good luck against NAU, Scumcats! And here is to an NAU WIN! 41-0 COMEON JACKS!

Twenty whole dollars. I better call the bank and get a new loan. When most ASU fans are even doubting them covering you know it's a good bet.

ASU looked okay, but Walter needs to work on that completion %. Your next five games are against 2003 bowl teams which will make or break your season.

UA and NAU will be about a 25 point victory for the Cats. Not A University lost four starting OLineman and with Stoops blitz schemes, Murietta will be on his ass all night with his main targets graduating or playing in the NFL.

Other lines I'm going to sleep on:
Cincinnati +18
UNLV +20.5
