For all the fans on this board that are enamored with Kevin Kolb, I thought I would post this article.

A week ago, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Larry Fitzgerald had dropped Kevin Kolb's name when Cardinals' management talked to him about their future quarterback situation.

This week, during an interview with WIP's Howard Eskin and Ike Reese, Kolb said he was flattered that Fitzgerald would think so highly of him.

"I mean, if he's not the best, he's one of the best receivers in the NFL, superstar," Kolb said. "For a guy like that to say something about me, it means a lot. And it's awfully flattering, and I hope that if something happens, their name comes up."

I would be totally against giving up the #5 pick this year in a trade for Kolb, but would be for giving the #38 pick (2nd rounder). I also would consider giving up our 2012 first rounder (not combined with any other pick) if it comes down to that. What do you guys think about giving up our future 2012 first round pick for Kolb if that is what it takes to get it done?

The problem that teams may have with Kolb, beyond what draft pick or picks they will have to give up to get him, will be his contract.

If you are going to trade a very high pick for him...you need to lock him up to a long-term extension.

He will be in the last year of his contract this year. His 2011 cap figure: $1.4M. A bargain for this one year...but...if you don't sign him long-term you run the risk of either having to franchise tag him next year (which would cost $15-17M) or let him enter free agency, that is, if he has high salary demands...which starting QBs these days tend to have.

But...because he hasn't proven to be a first-class starting QB yet, you cannot offer him a huge salary on a long-term deal this early, can you? You can offer him lucrative incentives...but would he be willing to sign such a deal?

Teams are better off waiting a year on him when he becomes a free agent...rather than risk losing a high draft pick or picks for a one-year rental. Unless a team is so convinced he's worth a lucrative long-term deal.

When you think about it, it's no different than giving a huge contract to a 1st round pick. In fact, it's probably less risky. Kolb won't cost as much as the #5 pick likely will and he's at least shown the ability to play in the league. I'm not saying give up the 5th for him, 2nd at best, or maybe a #1 next year, but there's risk in both and moreso on a rookie.

Did you even see Kolb play this year? He has the potential to be a Aaron Rodgers..

And....he has the potential to be Charlie Whitehurst. I watched him and he did not look very impressive at all.

I don't know. If the coaches and scouts think that he has what it takes, and obviously they have more resources than any of us to make such a determination, then I'll live with it and hope for the best.

Yeah, he put up pretty good stats in those games, I'll give him that. But once he got the slightest bit of pressure on him, he looked completely uncomfortable. Keep in mind, he had one of the best O-lines in football to go with some terrific talent around him and a very QB friendly system. Put him behind our O-line and I'm scared of how he'll respond. That and our offensive system is not quite as QB friendly.

a draft pick is no sure thing either. They have the potential to be Akili Smith or David Klingler.

You're right. I'm just worried about how he'd go from a WCO to our offense and how he'll handle the pressure that he is almost certain to face.

Granted, I'm not much of an offensive talent evaluator, nor am I a pro evaluator, as I have more of an eye towards defensive talent, but what I saw from him wasn't very impressive.

Draft picks are scary enough, look at all the busts we've had from various rounds. Kolb, if he can stay healthy a full season (a huge if), could be a franchise QB. He's worth a 1st if that's the case. I don't want to give up the 5th pick in the draft necessarily unless we have to. I'm hoping we're a playoff team this year and drafting in the 20s next year, Id much rather give up that pick if we're going to give up a first.

ideally yeah, a 2nd or 3rd would be great. But he could be a good one.

Totally un-true. The Eagles line gave up 49 sacks, one less than our line and 95 QB hits, two more than the Cards and this with a QB (Vick) who is extremely mobile. Imagine how many they would have given up if a less mobile QB under center.

This.

Several injuries and some poor FO decisions have killed their O-line.

I do agree with Hypo in that Reid has a very friendly QB offense and I attribute Kolb's perceived success to that. Is Kolb better then what we currently have, YES. Is he a legit NFL QB? I'm not convinced. AJ Feeley looked pretty good as a starter as well. Garcia had a rocking good year with Reid at the age of 30 something and hasn't done anything since IIRC.

Kolb won't be DA horrific but I doubt he will become a franchise QB.

OT, but Howard Eskin sucks. I just have to say that whenever I see his name.

I'm on boad with that.
