I did not realize that even though we have a lockout we can still talk to the player/agents about possible deals. We just cannot sign a contract. Many teams are already poised to strike the moment the lockout/strike ends. The Bengals have clearly stated they will not trade Carson Palmer and Palmer has clearly stated he will retire. This sounds stupid on the Bengals part. Palmer has only been in the league for 8 years. Following is from the Philadelphia Inquirer:

"March 22
Philadelphia Inquirer

"Could the Eagles trade Kevin Kolb before the NFL lockout ends?

No. But also yes, in a way.

"You can have trade discussions, but until the CBA is done, you cannot complete a trade," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said yesterday, the day when Sports Illustrated's Peter King reported that one team has offered the Birds a first-round pick in next month's draft for the 26-year-old quarterback. Neither Roseman nor Eagles president Joe Banner denied the King report (and why would they? It boosts the market). They did not offer official confirmation, though they said there is considerable interest.

But even though Roseman wouldn't say so, for obvious reasons, the fact is the Eagles are perfectly free right now to reach an agreement on Kolb's future home, pending a lifting of the lockout prior to the April 28-30 draft. They just can't make it official. If the lockout isn't lifted before the draft, of course, it all gets way complicated - and the league yesterday filed 57 pages of reasons why the U.S. District Court in Minnesota should not issue the injunction the players want that would end the lockout.

The vibe from Eagles people here at the NFL meetings, though, is that if the lockout is lifted even temporarily, the team is ready to act, despite the fact that King's report yesterday indicated the Eagles are hoping for an even better offer than the first-rounder. (King didn't say where in the round it would be.) Most scuttlebutt concerns NFC West teams such as San Francisco, Arizona, or Seattle, who might be a QB away from making the playoffs in a weak division. A Comcast SportsNet report cited a league source as saying Arizona has expressed the most interest. Arizona has the fifth overall pick. Hard to imagine the Eagles not jumping on that.

Kolb, who did not return messages yesterday, might be the NFL player sweating the lockout the most. Not only does it become unclear how much the Eagles can help their team in 2011 by trading him if the lockout continues through the draft, his value to a new team is clouded if months are frittered away. Nobody wants to bring a quarterback into a new system in August."

Some of us..like me have our fingers crossed....some of us don't. Hey if the Mayflower truck pulls into Glendale and Kolb jumps out, there ain't anything in the rulebook that keeps a guy from moving when he feels like and playing catch with No.11 is there????

Sal Paolantonio was on with Ryan Recello ESPN radio earlier. He stated that he spoke outright with Andy Reid face to face. He stated that Andy Reid absolutely wants to trade Kolb and would be willing to do so after the draft and he had no problem trading him for picks in 2012 as well.

Legal departments around the NFL has made it clear that teams cannot speak to players, players' agents, or even family members of players during the lockout. Your report is incorrect. Cards' officials had to clear out of the building for the Warner fundraiser a couple weeks ago because Fitz and some other players were going to be there.

I hope Bidwill didn't charge for the use of the building...

An interesting note about this scenario, Shane, is that one of the main reasons why Andy Reid is so willing to trade Kolb is the player the Eagles jumped in front of the Cardinals to snag in the 4th round last year:

QB Mike Kafka.

I've read that Reid and his staff are extremely high on Kafka...so high they are willing to have him serve as the #2 behind Mike Vick.

Whiz admitted last year following the draft that Kafka was the player they were targetting in the 4th round...and when the Eagles took him with the pick right in front of the Cardinals'---the Cardinals were so upset that they decided to trade the 4th rounder to the Saints to move back in the round and pick up an extra 6th rounder (which incidentally the Cardinals then used to move back into the 5th in order to take John Skeltion, the next QB on their list after Kafka.

If the Cardinals were to give up their #5 pick to acquire Kolb...the Eagles will have had their way with the Cardinals many times over in this deal... and let's not forget the fleece job they pulled on the Cardinals when they acquired CB Jorrick Calvin (who made their 53 man roster as one of the nickle backs and return men) while giving up FB Charles Scott who not only was cut, he wasn't even added to the practice squad.

The Cardinals also acquired a 6th round pick for starting guard Reggie Wells in an earlier training camp deal with the Eagles---which actually turned out in the Cardinals' favor as Wells wouldn't have started for the Cardinals and now they have an extra 6th round pick.

Kevin Hunt talked about this last night on Channel 12. I THINK he said the Cards were interested and possible front-runners but I was only half listening. He stopped talking before I found the remote.

Anybody else hear his report?

He's a good fit for what they want to do and got a nice jump on it in Northwestern. He wasn't the prettiest guy in TD:INT but it was clear that he was pretty good at reading the field and the fact that it's not too dissimilar a passing-philosophy (minus being a true spread) to what Reid runs is a bonus. I don't seem him as a continual starter, but he's a mighty fine guy to come in and run the offense 3 games a season.

Does Kolb have a problem with concussions? If so, this would make me think twice.

No way for #5. I'd *consider* and 2012 first, or better yet a conditional 2012 pick something like a 2nd that can escalate to a 1st if we are above .500.

OMFG, you are STILL on this guys jock? He never ever showed flashes of NFL-caliber talent at school. If the Eagles are high on him, I hope he has to play for them, because that will be one team we'll definitely finish in front of. Kafka? Ha!

So is it the opinion that Kolb is better than Newton or Gabbert?

I would rather get PP, or miller with 5 then try to pick up Mallett in the 2nd. Then pick up bulger or another vet in FA.

The story says that the Cards have expressed interest, but no where does it say that the Cards are the team that offered a first round pick. That's the writer's leap in logic. I can easily imagine that we've offered our second round pick, and would be prepared to offer something extra but conditional in 2012. Highly doubt that we'd ever give up #5 unless, perhaps, it was for Kolb and Philly throwing in their first round choice.
