STEWART SIGNS FOR TWO YEARS
Faced with a shrinking pool of options, quarterback Kordell Stewart agreed (apparently with some reluctance) to a two-year contract with the Bears.
According to the Great Gazoo, Stewart snared a paltry (by quarterback standards) a $1.75 million bonus, and he'll earn $3.25 million total in 2003.
Stewart had wanted a contract in the range of $25 million over five years. His leverage evaporated on Wednesday, when the only other clear-cut starting job was filled by Jeff Blake.
The plan, in theory, is for Stewart to prove that he's worth a big-money deal in 2003. Then, he'll try to snag a larger payday from the Bears.
Conversely, if he stinks it up in 2003, the Bears can cut their losses, with only $875,000 in dead money for 2004.
