For all those who think that we should possibly take Andre Johnson in the first round, all I have to say is look at Koren Robinson. It's almost a rule to be very wary of drafting underclassmen wide receivers in the draft. This is due to the tremendous difference in the physicality of the position from college to the NFL. The few underclassmen receivers that do succeed in the NFL in their FIRST year are always very pollished receivers. The underclassmen who don't succeed are those with tremendous physical ability but lack the pollish in their routes, the ability to seperate and block. This is one reason for us to very wary of drafting Andre Johnson because the one area that he lacks is pollish. This is a very similar to Koren Robinson who was a physically dominant receiver in college, but lacked pollish, and therefore had very little impact in his rookie year. Yes, he has come into his own now, but I believe that we would all want a rookie who has an impact this year. Another example of this is David Terrell.

Be wary of Andre Johnson. He might be dominant, but not until 2004 or late 2003 at the earliest.

So true, but didn't

Didn't Chis Chambers have a good rookie year as rookie years go with the Dolphins? And I'm not counting Randy Moss because he not your regular rookie reciever.

Yes, Chris Chambers did have a good rookie year with the Dolphins but he was a second round pick. I was kinda targeting first rounders, but I will still talk about Chambers as his is a lot like Josh Reed this year. They (being both Chambers & Reed) were polished receivers but it was doubted if they could hold up physically in the NFL the first couple years. Evidently they proved this wrong to a degree, but one thing to note is that they both ran crisp routes for young receivers.

Randy Moss was also known for being a both a very pollished receiver and extremely talented receiver. HIs problem was that he was very skinny coming into the NFL (like he isn't a string bean now though) and had played against a totally different level of talent at Marshall, so the Vikings protected him and ran him onm routes down the field so that he didn't get beat up in the intermediate zones.

The one thing that I love about Charles Rogers is that he is a very crisp receiver which leads you to believe that he will have an immediate impact his rookie year, along with his physical gifts. Also, probably the most surprising thing, is that he lacks the star syndrome that is usually apparent in wide receivers.

Agree except Chambers was less polished than either Robinson or Terrell he simply got in a position where he got more PT, had a better QB, and was in a role that fit him perfectly, running deep routes.

Remember the quotes from Sam Madison about Chambers as a rookie, something like when this kid figures out what the hell he's doing he'll be unreal?

Johnson is VERY raw, great athlete but he won't be a star right away he needs to be in a system that only asks him to do certain things, go deep primarily, while he's learning the ropes.

...which makes it very tough to imagine us taking him in the top 10.

Allright Russ, what do you think about draft day? Yours is probably the only opinion I haven't heard.

I would rank it this way right now..

Suggs
Leftwich
Robertson
Kennedy
Johnson

If we don't get Blake or Griese I move Leftwich up to #1.

So, no Newman, or do just doubt that he will be there. Real quick first 6 picks of the draft.

1-Bengals-I say Suggs, but they could go with Newman.
2-Lions-Rogers all the way.
3-Texans-Gross, especially since they lost their RT.
4-Bears-I say Jimmy Kennedy, could go Suggs.
5-Cowboys-Newman / Suggs / Leftwich / Palmer. Pick one.
6-Cards-I think Suggs will be gone. Leftwich or Newman, possibly Robertson.

Agree, disagree?

I think Newman will be gone.

Also I changed my mind Johnson ahead of Kennedy.

In your draft you have Palmer there at 5? That would surprise me, I think the reason the Bengals are talking up other players is they want to convince people they're not committed to taking Palmer so they can get offers to trade down. The more offers they get the better the offers will be.

If it pans out like what you're saying, I would say take Palmer at 6. Although I believe he'll be gone by then. I predict:

1. Bengals take Palmer
2. Lions take Rogers
3. Texans take Andre Johnson
4. Da Bears take either Suggs or Leftwich
5. Cowgirls take Leftwich or Suggs
6. The Mighty Cardinals take Newman or Trufant.

Probably way off the mark, but it is my two cents worth...

Oh I agree that the Bengals would love to trade down and get Palmer, I just don't believe that they will be able to and if they stay it's either Suggs or Newman.

One thing I am wondering is if you think that I am way off base believing that the Cowboys might take Leftwich. The only reason I say this is that Parcells doesn't have much patience with Quarterbacks making mistakes if they don't have talent. Also he seems to like a guy who can throw a good deep ball as well as have good size in the pocket. To me, Leftwich makes too good of a fit.

Cincy-Palmer
Detriot-Rogers
Houston-Suggs
Chicago- Kennedy
Dallas-Newman (Leftwich has an outside chance here)

I keep hearing Houston upset on missing out on Colvin and talking up Suggs. Either way Suggs doesn't slide to us.

I doubt we pick a DT with that #6 pick. We already have Bryant signed to a top-12 contract, and Graves stated he wants to lower the payroll on the OL (rightly so-it's packed with $$$)...I don't think we pay that much loot for another DT.
