Mar. 2--KPHO (Ch. 5) and Cox Communications announced Wednesday they will broadcast live every game of the NCAA basketball tournament.

The two television partners are using digital technology to provide multicast telecasts on four channels -- 5 and 705 and two new channels (764 and 765) being launched by Cox.

Viewers need to be a Cox Digital customer in the Valley or have a digital television with an antenna in order to access those channels. KPHO said it is also working with other cable providers to offer this event to their customers.

"We realize many of our viewers have hometown or collegiate ties in various parts of the country," said KPHO vice president and general manager Steven Hammel. "This partnership will allow fans to watch the game of their choice live in its entirety."

They are adding a couple of temporary channels to handle the "overflow" of the early rounds. Digital cable customers will get it for free, I think.

ncaasports.com is offering their internet coverage for all the games untill the sweet sixteen for free. I bought the coverage last season and it was well worth it. I really liked the archives, because I could go back and watch the endings of every games anytime I wanted to.

Cox will be airing the entire NCAA "March Madness" basketball tournament 03/16/06-04/03/06 in partnership with our Phoenix CBS affiliate KPHO.
Details as follows:

For the 2006 tournament we will temporarily add two KPHO multicast channels to support this partnership for all 63 games, Channels 764 & 765 (PHX only).

KPHO will also be airing games in analog format on channel 5 - sometimes these games will mirror the SD and HD games on 5.1/Cox Ch. 705 and other times the games will be unique.

The two new channels will launch on March 10th, one week before the start of the tournament to allow advanced opportunities for our DVR customers to schedule recordings.

Then these channels will drop back off of our lineup after the second and third rounds of the tournament.

We do not have this arrangement with KOLD in Tucson.

Tucson customers can view games carried on channel 13 in analog and channel 713 in HD.

Because these additional games will also be carried over-the-air and on CableAmerica, we can not state that this is exclusive to Cox.

Information about the tournament will also be available on cox.net and cox.com

Cool!

By the time the Sweet 16 rolls around, regular TV will be able to show most of the games anyways.
