Kung Fu Hustle Sequel in the Works

Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group is developing a sequel to Stephen Chow's Kung Fu Hustle, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia managing director Barbara Robinson said Chow and his writing team from "Hustle," including Tsang Kan Cheong, have been writing a draft in the evenings while on the road for the 30-country Sony Pictures Releasing International rollout of the film.

The studio plans to begin shooting the "Hustle" before the end of the year somewhere in China.

Chow on the Kung Fu Hustle Sequel

Hong Kong actor/director Stephen Chow told the Associated Press he'll start filming the sequel to his action film Kung Fu Hustle either late this year or early 2006.

Chow called the movie's $17.1 million box office take in North America "not bad," but said, "I hope I can do better in the future."

Chow said casting for the sequel hasn't been finalized and that he hasn't settled on a female lead.

"There will be a lot of new characters in the movie. We'll need a lot of new actors. It's possible that we'll look for people abroad besides casting locals," he added.

The first movie, a collaboration with Columbia Pictures, became the biggest grossing local film in Hong Kong ever.

Chow replied: “Yes! Actually, it won’t be so much a Kung Fu Hustle 2; it would be a modern-day kung fu story set in a foreign country and have its own standalone story, but it will have a similar direction and concept as Kung Fu Hustle.”
