3M a year is too expensive for Warner now, let alone 4 years from now. Come on.

What is the probability the Matt is injured and misses one game this season?

Two games?

Three games?

If we are in playoff contention and that happens how much more likely are we to win those games with Kurt as the backup QB?

Is it worth 3m in those circumstances if it means the difference between going to the playoffs or sitting enviously watching other teams go instead of the Cards?

The receipts for one post season game alone would be in excess of the whole cost of his contract.

Risk management is what it is all about. The QB is the one position where you put the best possible mitigation plan into place, and I think in Kurt we have done that. 3 Mil, by season end that might look like chicken feed, and it is a small price to pay for such essential insurance.

I'd like to see him extended, but only if Warner throws in a case of this:

I think eurocard had a solid point. What if Matt goes down and Warner comes in and lights it up for awhile, how cheap you think he would be then? Then he would leave if someone made him some big offers and we have no competant backup. 2-3 mil a year is fine for a backup of Kurts experience and what he brings as a teacher to Leinart cannot be overlooked! I personally love that our QBOF is being mentored by a MVP who has a great understanding of the game!

Who cares? Lets say that there is a 100% chance that Matt gets injured. :stick: Kurt is still under contract for 2 more years. In your case, we should be talking about the possibilty of Matt getting hurt in 3 years from now (not including up and coming one) because would then need to have resigned Kurt or someone else.

Look, I get that people want to resign Kurt, I really do. But let's not make it sound like a priority that we do it right away, when he still has two years left on a deal that is overpaid IMO.

It wasn't but a few months ago, that Kurt thought about retiring. Trying to have a backup QB locked up for 3M a year for the next 4 years is not a great idea. If you make it 1.5M, I would be all for it.

In other news, Charlie Batch makes 1.6 mil, I think.

I am not certain, but I think that this is the last year of Warner's contract, and that is why he is talking about an extension. dcr, where did you get that he is signed for two more years?

ok, Warner is signed through 2008....fine
he wants to finish out his deal.....fine

at some point the team has to have a long term plan to get a younger guy in to backup Matt

besides, isnt this a topic that should be broached in Sept/Oct 2008? Who knows how he'll feel next year? His skills may have diminished substantially by then...who knows

Kurt is 36, not getting any younger, and has 2 years left

let him see it out, and decide sometime next year. there is absolutely no point to even remotely deal with this now.

Do it and don't think twice about it. Not only is Warner the best backup in the NFL and very capable of starting for a number of teams in this league still, but he's an asset to the Phoenix community.

I respect your opinions. What do you feel is an acceptable price?

I feel 1.5M per year is a good contract, 2.0 is the top of the scale, and anything more than 2.0 is overpaying.

Thanks.

A fair asking price I think for Warner would be about 2-2.5 million, with a possibility to make over 3 with incentives.

I think that for a person of Warner's age, capability and the premium on a quality backup QB, this deal is fair for both sides.

How much would you spend on a quality QB coach?

What Whis is getting now, plus some. I also have no problem giving Grimm 1M per if he can actually turn this line around.

a no brainer

you bet I would resign Kurt Warner and even for his current salary. The NFL is a physical sport where your always one play away from the backup taking over, especially at the QB and HB position where the backup is so valuable. No, he would not be overpaid in my opinion at all considering the position he currently holds for this team with a young QB. This is a gift, the Cardinals should jump on this and do it. You will not find a better backup at the QB position than Warner.

does anyone here actually remember how mediocre/bad Warner has been in almost every regular season stint since he got axed by the Rams? The guy's nails in pre-season, playing against second stringers and against vanilla first string defense, but I think people WAYYYYYY over-rate his effectiveness should Matt go down. Sure, he may be better than a good deal of back-up QBs out there, but if he's in there, we're still pretty screwed. That ain't worth 4 million dollars a year.

2 million is the max a back-up QB should make, especially one who as brittle and turnover prone as Warner has shown to be in his last few seasons.

Kurts a class act on the field and off the field. Don,t want to even think about another back up QB.

reality...

even with his fumbles and being injury prone to an extent because of his age, any QB even at Warner's current status will get big bucks because a lot of teams do not have a young QB like Leinart or even Alex Smith and therefore such veteran QBs as Warner can get big bucks and start. Warner is not fooling himself by thinking he can be a full time starter or he would want out of Arizona and get the money elsewhere. BUT, he would like to stay with the Cardinals and knows his role which again is worth the money that a QB with his ability will make in today's NFL. I personally think the Cards would be foolish by not trying to keep him around for a few more years. Name another QB of his ability that would be willing to backup a young QB like Leinart whose seems to have a bright future and then never have the starting postition only in case of an injury...I can't think of one. I still think Warner is better than Brad Johnson, Culpepper, Trent Green, Harrington or Carr. I did not say he is great but a little above average and that is very hard to find in the league right now...we lucked out getting Matt in the draft.
