With all of the dui awareness these days, you would think some of these high profile athletes could refrain from drinking and driving. You're a freakin' millionaire...hire a personal driver. What a loser. :(

Kwame Brown arrested for DUI
August 19, 2003

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) --
Washington Wizards forward Kwame Brown faces a charge of driving under the influence after being stopped while weaving along a highway near his hometown, according to a police report.

Brown's blood-alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit, and he smelled of alcohol and appeared unsteady on his feet during roadside sobriety tests about 3 a.m. Friday, Glynn County police officer Robert Sasser said in a report obtained Tuesday by The Georgia Times-Union.

Brown, 21, was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence, having an open container of alcohol and failure to maintain a lane of travel, according to the report. He was released from the Glynn County Detention Center on a $925 bond pending a court date, which has not been set.

The former Glynn Academy star, the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NBA draft out of high school, could not be reached for comment.

Ernie Grunfeld, the Wizards' president of basketball operations, said he had talked to Brown.

``He and his representative are handling the situation. We will have no further comment until the matter is resolved,'' Grunfeld said.

NBA spokesman Mark Broussard said the league will not decide if Brown will be penalized ``until it goes through the court system.'' NBA players Stephon Marbury and Derrick Coleman served one-game suspensions after pleading no contest to DUI last summer.

Sasser's report said Brown tested positive when given a field alcohol sensor test. He then went to the jail for an Intoxilyzer test, which showed that Brown had a blood-alcohol content of 0.150 percent, Sasser said.

The legal limit in Georgia is 0.08 percent.

In April 2002, Brown was charged with speeding after being clocked driving 120 mph in a 60-mph construction zone on Interstate 16.

What do you think the chances are that Mr. Brown has a driver's license after this? Didn't see get an excessive speeding ticket last summer?

What an idiot!

Actually I would still want to trade for him.

I think he is just in a bad situation. There was a lot of pressure on him. The team didn't really help him. The coach and MJ didn't back him up.

No but there are reasons.

Steph had a DUI as well. DUI might be the most common crime in the world.
I am sure there are many people on this message board that have done it but were not caught, maybe you don't even realize that you comitted a DUI because obviously you were drunk before got on the car.

You are making excuses for a crime. And that is not cool.

Were you drunk when you typed this?

No one unknowingly drinks and drives. It's a conscious choice.

And even if it was determined to be the most common crime, it's still wrong.

Why is Brown's transgression worse than Marbury's? I'm having difficulty understanding this.

And where did I say it was worse? I'm having difficulty understanding that.

The tenor of your response to SirStefan certainly suggested that you wouldn't want a "criminal" like Brown on the Suns, and that the idea of contextualizing his transgression disgusts you. And yet, you are happy to embrace Marbury on the team, in spite of his having committed the identical offense.

I don't excuse driving under the influence. But the sad reality is, if you aren't willing to have some people with checkered pasts on your NBA team, you aren't going to have much of a team.

So you can either take the high road and have a band of model citizens who don't win any games, or you can accept imperfect people in order to compete against the rest of the league.

I'm not sure how The Washington Wizards run things, but what makes Marbury's crime even worse is that the Phoenix Suns pay a car service to pick these guys up if they can't drive.

Now I don't think anybody should drink and drive. Even when people think they are fine to drive they don't realize that their reaction time is slowed by the alcohol. So they might not actually caused an accident, but they will get into accidents that would otherwise be avoidable because they can't react quickly enough.

It just seems worse when these celebrities do it because it should be so much easier for them to just call a taxi or car service. It also seems worse because they have so much more to lose in appearances justify getting caught.

Um, excuse me Eric, but I was replying to slinslin, who was implying that Kwame's arrest was caused by the way he was treated by the Washington Wizards organization.

Don't know where you came up with that ludicrous idea that I suggested anything about Kwame Brown being on the Suns, or on any team for that matter.

Frankly, I am a little confused. I posted twice with only a few words in each post. You have attacked me with no provocation and for no reason.

Oops, right. I should have checked. It was slinslin, not SirStefan.

You have attacked me with no provocation and for no reason.

Come on, Chaplin, not every difference of opinion is an "attack."

What difference of opinion??? You're attacking me just to do it. I never said anything except that I disagreed that slinslin's excuse that the Wizards were the cause of his DUI. That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

You really seem like you're having issues with this, SweetD. Do you feel threatened? Maybe you should just take your issues offline.

Actually I think this message board is a lot better than most in this way. There are some bitch sessions, but they are much more mild and infrequent than most message boards.

That said, let's end this bitch session now.

Very true.

That's why I'm driving much slower if I drunk some beers.

I know it seems like a pain in the ass, but it's a much better idea to find another driver (sober) or wait awhile to drive home. You need to watch one of those videos where they test people's reaction times after a couple of drinks. Usually with one or two beers they are OK. Much more than that in the people start running over things that they had previously easily avoided.

And before you say something like, "I'm an excellent drunk driver or I'm extra careful," you should know that many of those people in those tests were saying the exact same things.
