Brown

Brown's agent, Mark Bartlestein, told ESPN.com on Monday night that the former No. 1 pick in the 2001 draft has reached a verbal agreement on a new contract with the Detroit Pistons.

The contract is believed to be a two-year deal worth $8 million, with Brown -- who spent his first four seasons as a pro in Washington after being drafted by then-Wizards president Michael Jordan -- holding a player option to return to free agency after this season.

Brown earned nearly $9.1 million last season in the final year of his previous three-year deal, which the 26-year-old received in the summer of 2005 in a sign-and-trade from Washington to the Los Angeles Lakers. Brown's expiring salary was the chief chip that the Lakers used to convince the Memphis Grizzlies to send Pau Gasol to L.A. on Feb. 1 in a trade that earned the Grizzlies widespread criticism.

Brown played in only 15 games with the Grizzlies after the trade, averaging just 3.5 points and 3.8 rebounds in under 14 minutes per game.

I'd take him for the veteran minimum but not 8 million.

I reckon the Pistons might just turn him into an ok player, he has no pressure their being surrounded by quality players to push him in the right direction. Might be good decision by Kwame to go to detroit, kinda feel sorry for him; he has had it tough since that number 1 selection...

Why would anybody pay that much for Kwame. You would think Dumas learned his lesson with Muhammed.

Who knows, maybe Brown would be good in Detroit. I mean, they don't have a superstar in there.

The consensus around here is also not reality.

Kwame Brown is a pretty good center, especially defensively. Better than anyone we had in like the last 20 years excluding Shaq.

Maybe people will stop complaining about Diaw's salary now.

i think everyone exaggerates kwame's shortcomings. yeah, he was the #1 pick in the draft and a bust. but if you're no longer gambling that high draft pick and you're not throwing the bank at him, he IS a fairly good defending athletic big. if you don't expect much more than defense and a few putbacks, and you're no longer thinking about what he SHOULD HAVE BEEN, but rather, WHAT HE IS, $4M a year for ONLY 2 YEARS is not bad. think about it, 2 years is enough time to decide if you like him or not. you're not breaking the bank on $4M/year. and if you don't like him he's not clogging your cap for a long time. hell, i think kwame is fairly close in skillset and impact on the game as diop and diop received $31M/5 years. that's $6.2M/year. by that standard kwame is a really good deal.

now diaw's contract is over twice kwame's and the expectations when diaw signed were much higher than the expectations will be for kwame coming into the pistons. that's a bad comparison. i think kwame got market.
