La Liga chief shifting blame on Real Madrid over fixture congestion – ‘Carlo, I’m sure…’
Real Madrid have once again found themselves at the centre of controversy regarding match schedules, with their coach Carlo Ancelotti voicing strong complaints over the lack of rest time between fixtures.
During his press conference, Ancelotti emphasised that Real Madrid would no longer play matches with less than 72 hours of recovery time.
The Italian manager insisted that the club had twice requested a schedule adjustment for their recent fixture but were ignored, making it clear that this would be the last time they accept such a situation.
Javier Tebas fires back
However, LaLiga president Javier Tebas quickly responded to these claims, taking to social media to address Ancelotti’s statements.
He pointed out that Real Madrid had themselves requested a change in timing for their upcoming match against Leganes.
Initially, La Liga had scheduled the game for Saturday at 4:15 PM to provide more rest before their Copa del Rey semi-final against Real Sociedad.
“Carlo, I’m sure Emilio (Butragueno, Real Madrid’s director of institutional relations) told you that La Liga had scheduled the next matchday of Leganes for Saturday at 4:15 PM to give you more time before the semi-final against Real Sociedad.”

But according to Tebas, Real Madrid’s own representative, Butragueno, requested the match be moved to 9:00 PM to accommodate players returning from international duty.
“But Emilio asked La Liga’s competition director to change it to 9:00 PM—surely with your knowledge and authorization, I imagine—to benefit those coming from the FIFA round.”
As a result, the club now has less than 72 hours between the final whistle on Saturday and their semi-final on Tuesday—contradicting their complaints about the scheduling.
“And now we have less than 72 hours between the final whistle of Saturday’s match and the start of Tuesday’s semi-final.
“May the best qualify for the final,” he wrote.
It is said that La Liga had already issued an official statement regarding the scheduling of Real Madrid’s clash against Villarreal.
They clarified that the club had not raised any objections until they aired their grievances publicly through their in-house television channel and Ancelotti’s press conference.
Furthermore, La Liga highlighted that other clubs have requested schedule adjustments in the past with sufficient notice, and such requests were accommodated.
