La Canfora: Cards high on D.J. Fluker

Maybe smoke and mirrors, maybe not.

"There is going to be an early run on tackles -- Joeckel, Fisher and rising tackle D.J. Fluker, who I continue to hear the Cardinals are high on -- are all likely to go in the first seven picks. While some teams are down on Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson, enough feel he is relatively safe that I expect him to go in the first half of the first round."

I have to remind myself every year at this time , (final week before the draft) take everything you hear with an entire shaker of salt .

It is the silly season, and drafting D.J. Fluker at 7th overall is the silliest idea we've heard yet.

VERY wary of players making last week rises up the draft boards.

That said, this stuff doesn't happen in a vacuum. It might be coming out that teams see certain players as system fits better than others, AND those teams such as the Cardinals are sitting high up in the draft order.

If they're looking at Fluker hard, that would automatically rise him up the draft boards. Funny it so long for this to surface now though.

They could seriously be persuing a trade down with someone. He or Cooper, they could do worse, depends what they're looking for. You add someone like Travis Frederick to Fluker and you suddenly have plenty of beef up front to move piles.

I suppose. Nothing that I've seen from the Colts tape would suggest to me that Arians and Goodwin are looking for "beef" up front to move piles. If we trade down, it would likely be for Jonathan Cooper or Chance Warmack, likely in that order.

It's just difficult for me to conceive that the Cards actually have a trade partner--someone looking to move up in the draft from far enough down that Fluker becomes someone you're convincing yourself on--unless the expectation is that Milliner or one of the DTs slips a little bit.

We are high on a lot of guys. Doesn't mean we are high on all of them for the #7 pick.

They could like Tyler Eifert in a trade down too. BA has said he likes a few of the DT's also. I'd think a little later for that. They have so many area's they can use help in, that I think a trade down is their best scenario unless Joekel or Fisher slips down. They can use an extra pick or two. I like the draft especially in rounds 2-4. Not so much Rd. 1 overall.

Yeah. I had hoped that either or both of Eifert and Ertz would fall to us in the second round, but I've seen projections where they're both gone by the mid-20s.

I think at this point it's more likely that Demontre Moore falls to us in the second round than one of those tight ends.

Glad you brought that up. Would not be surprised at all if we took a DT. IF Bowles follows the Parcells blueprint then Dan Williams may not be what they want as a starter to play the middle of the D. They may want a guy with way more athletic ability, like Jason Ferguson playing in the middle of not one but two of Parcells teams. Then throw in the fact that Dan Williams supposedly showed up to workouts 15 pounds over weight once again. One of the guys on NFL Networks Path to the Draft brought it up on yesterdays show.

Yet another 1st rounder(Williams) that may be a complete waste.:bang:

Fifteen pounds over at this point is hardly a concern (imo), system fit may be, although Williams left or right movement down the line seems pretty good.

The fact that LaCanforna says this, well it then informs me that the chances are then very unlikely. I seriously doubt LaCanforna ever knows more than half the people on this board :)

Showing up to workouts 15 pounds over weight isn't a concern? Then why do teams give these guys weight goals they would like them to show up at? Some teams have it as part of their workout bonuses. Not to mention it is not just this one year, it is a pattern.

The Cardinals draft board was finished 2 weeks after the college season ended. Fluker isn't anywhere on the top 50.

Don't the Cards already have a player like that in David Carter?

As for Williams' weight I'm not that concerned about it in April. Now if he's that way in July its a different story. From the coaches film I've watched the Cards run defense was 100% better when Big Dan was in the game. But then guys like him are often victims of a coaching change so I wouldn't be shocked to see your scenario play out.

Fluker is projected as purely a right tackle. I don't see as drafting an RT at #7 especially when Massie has done a good job there.

Yeah no way you spend the #7 pick on a right tackle. That would be a reach.
