The Southwestern Warriors hosted the Somerset Lady Jumpers in a crosstown showdown on Monday evening at the War Path, with recent series history in favor of the Warriors as they were 5-1 in their last six meetings. Fans expecting a pitching duel were sadly mistaken as both teams were strong at the plate throughout, with the Jumpers managing to survive with a 10-9 victory over their rivals.
Southwestern became the first team to score in the bottom of the first inning, as following a double from Kylie Dalton, Abigail Whitescarver was able to drill the ball to deep center for a home run, putting the Warriors ahead 2-0. Somerset was able to cut into that lead a bit in the second inning, with Makenna Baker hitting a solo home run before two straight strikeouts from Whitescarver on the mound.
Following a single from Kylie Spencer in the top of the third and a walk on Emry Pyles, Maci Huff was able to single to load the bases up with just one out. With two outs, Aleah Wesley was able to hit a hard ground ball to left field to score two, putting the visitors ahead 3-2. Chloe Carroll walked to begin the bottom of the third, with an RBI single from Dalton tying things up shortly after before two strikeouts from Reagan Childers ended the inning.
After a double from Eva Hines and Nora Grider reached on a dropped third strike in the top of the fourth, Childers was able to double on a line drive to center for two RBI’s, putting Somerset ahead 5-3. Somerset continued to build on that lead after Jayla Singleton came in to pitch for the Warriors, as Wesley was hit by a pitch to score a run and Baker singled for one RBI to give the Jumpers a 7-3 edge. Southwestern managed to plate one in the bottom of the fourth, with Makenna New grounding out to score one, cutting the Warriors’ deficit down to 7-4.
Halle Norvell singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and Zoie Lowery was able to bring her home soon after with a two-run home run that cut the Warriors’ deficit down to just one run at 7-6. In the top of the sixth, Somerset really put the pressure on their rivals by scoring three with one swing of the bat, as Addy White was able to hammer the ball over the fence in center for a three-run homer to push the Jumpers’ lead back up to four at 10-6.
Southwestern began rallying in the bottom of the sixth, and after two straight walks on Carroll and Dalton, Whitescarver was able to reach third on a fielding error, scoring two to cut the Somerset lead in half. An RBI single from Norvell made the score 10-9 and after a double from Brynn Troxell, the Jumpers were in dangerous territory in terms of letting their lead disappear. A clutch strikeout from Childers and a fly out ended the scoring chance however.
The Warriors went to the bottom of the final inning still down by just one run, but couldn’t manage to get solid contact on the ball with three straight fly outs as the Jumpers celebrated a 10-9 victory over their crosstown rivals.
White and Wesley led the way for the Jumpers with three RBI’s, while Childers and Baker each added two apiece. White and Baker each had a home run in the win, with Huff, Hines and Spencer each adding a hit. Childers earned the win on the mound, going all seven innings while allowing nine runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts. Somerset improves to 4-1 and will next travel to North Laurel on Tuesday.

Troxell and Arabella Lowery each had a hit as well, with Carroll adding two stolen bases.
