Just had the motherboard on my dell dimension 8200 replaced, running xp with sp-2, and it won't connect to the internet wirelessly. It shows an excellant signal, that it is part of the network and that it is sending packets but not receiving any. I get the following error code when trying to log on to aol:

Ac 3001; error x84100118
oswinxp-sp2; acs 4.6.61.3
TCP/IP connection using Dun entry
Firewalls: microsoft firewall.

What do I have to do to get this to connect. I have a Netgear router and when I try to install the disk it says there is no internet connection. I tried to log on with explorer but it wouldn't connect.

Thanks

You have the default Windows Firewall running that installs with Sp2. Right click on your network connection and go to advanced. You'll see the tab for firewall, shut that baby down

sounds like a AOL specific error for the AOL program. can you open IE or FF and surf?

Sounds like the wireless is associated but not authenticated.

Make sure you have entered the correct security key if you have WEP or WAP encryption enabled on the router.

Does it work if you plug in an ethernet cable?

No it doesn't connect with the ethernet cable. I get the same error code as above trying to connect to AOL and when tryinhg to go thru explorer I get "The page cannot be displayed"... I am also getting a box saying " router is unavailable" while the signal to the network is excellant.

Hmmmm.

Sounds like some TCP/IP troubleshooting is in order.

Assuming this is a windows box open a command line.
START: RUN:
type CMD and click OK.

At the command prompt type: "ping 127.0.0.1" (sans quotes)
You should get four ping responses.

Type ipconfig

Ping your IP address as shown in the ipconfig results.
You should get four ping responses.

Ping the dns server by typing "ping 192.168.0.1" (or what ever the name server IP address is)
You should get ping responses here as well.

I got responses on all except when pinging the dns server "ping 192.168.0.0".

Got a response of "destination host unreachable" 4 times.

Make sure you use the numbers listed in the ipconfig results for the DNS server.
Sorry you need to type "ipconfig /all" to see the DNS address information.

The numbers I used for DNS were an example.

Also try and ping the address for the Default Gateway.

Are the wireless and ethernet connection bridged?

It doesn't show a default gateway. Also should I connect to the web directly or thru my pc?

I will be out of town until Saturday. So any suggestions will be done then.

Thanks all for your help.
