Casino giant Las Vegas Sands Corp. is leading a consortium of investors that is proposing to build a $1 billion domed stadium on 42 acres near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas that would be home to school's football team — and possibly a National Football League franchise.

Andy Abboud, Las Vegas Sands' senior vice president of government relations and community development said Thursday Las Vegas needs a modern stadium with at least 65,000 seats to drive additional tourism to Southern Nevada.

Mark Davis, owner of the Oakland Raiders, is scheduled to meet with Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson on Friday, possibly to discuss stadium details. A potential move by the Raiders to Los Angeles earlier this month was rejected by the NFL. Abboud said Las Vegas Sands has had conversations with officials from other NFL teams as well.

"We are moving forward with the stadium concept with or without an NFL team," Abboud said Thursday. "We see a lot more opportunities — conference championships, bowl games, NFL exhibition football, boxing, soccer, neutral site games, and music festivals. There is an entire segment out there."

While a leaked memo from UNLV president Len Jessup said representatives of the Oakland Raiders will be in Las Vegas on Friday to check out potential stadium sites, team owner Mark Davis would offer only a cryptic comment.

"In typical Raider fashion," Davis said with a laugh over the phone from the Bay Area, "I can neither confirm nor deny."

Davis will be in Las Vegas, and is scheduled to meet with Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson, Sands spokesman Ron Reese confirmed.

The Sands Corp. announced Thursday that it was lending its support to build a $1 billion domed stadium on a vacant 42 acres of land recently purchased by UNLV near the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Koval Lane across from McCarran International Airport.

"Correspondingly, the Sands leadership team let us know that officials from the Oakland Raiders are scheduled to travel to Las Vegas and tour locations around the valley for a potential new home, and they have asked us to meet them at our 42-acre site on Friday morning to answer questions about that site," Jessup wrote in the memo, which was first reported by Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston.

The NFL has had a hard line against Las Vegas, and it is hard to see the league signing off on allowing a team to relocate to the gambling capital of the country.

I think they should allow a team to move to Las Vegas. I don't think it would influence the outcome of the games.

How many Casinos are near other teams? Atlantic City, San Diego, Los Angeles and other areas have Indian Casinos so what is the difference?

IMO if all of the leagues are going to bed with these gambling/fantasy sites their argument against Vegas is no longer valid.

Atlantic City doesn't have sports betting. The closest place would be Delaware but they only have parlay betting. Someone brought up betting sites the league already deals with. Technically they're not gambling per se but money fantasy leagues.

2-3 teams within a 6 hour drive from Phoenix? Hell yeah I'm in. Raiders, Chargers, Rams. Road trips here I come.



Speaking of which; Don't you think the Raiders fans in Las Vegas would hate going to games? You think Phoenix is bad for away team fans, Vegas would be 100X worse. I could see games where opposing teams fans outnumber home fans by far. Every time a team is a short drive or even a short flight away, its vacation time. Vegas as a city would be smart to get behind this though, tons of extra flights and booked up hotel rooms all over the city and lots of drunk NFL fan gambling money pouring in.

2 million plus over 40 million visitors a year. With no shortage of hotels and casinos that would want season tickets and boxes. Season tickets would be more attractive to out-of-town purchasers than just about anywhere else--especially from SF and LA. And it's a league that requires a large contained media market less than any other. It's a unique case, and the Raiders would be the perfect team to take advantage of it. (I don't think the league will go for it, though.)
