Turning point: Charlie Combs scored the tie-breaking goal at 4:45 of the third period to lead the South Carolina Stingrays past the Jacksonville Icemen 3-2 in Saturday night's ECHL hockey at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
Three stars: 1. Austin Magera, South Carolina (one goal, one assist). 2. Ivan Chukarov, Jacksonville (one goal, one assist). 3. Mitchell Gibson, South Carolina (25 saves).
Penalty box: Fights broke out twice, pitting Jacksonville's Chase Lang against South Carolina's Ben Hawerchuk in the first period and Jacksonville's Brody Crane against South Carolina's Dean Loukus during the second.
Around the rink: Leading scorer Chris Grando found the net for the Icemen (39-19-5-1) two minutes into the third period, tying the scores 2-2. … Erik Middendorf scored the night's first goal for the Stingrays (45-14-3-2) midway through the first period. … Matt Vernon recorded 21 saves in the Jacksonville net. … The third-place Icemen are now 10 points behind the second-place Florida Everblades in the ECHL South Division race. … Saturday's game was only the sixth home regulation loss for the Icemen in 2024-25.
