Garnett talks now include Suns' Stoudemire and third team

By Chad Ford and Marc Stein
ESPN.com

Updated: June 27, 2007, 10:05 AM ET

There was a growing sentiment around the league Tuesday night that the Kevin Garnett sweepstakes are nearing a conclusion and that the Phoenix Suns are the most likely winners, with two trade scenarios emerging that could potentially land Garnett in the desert by draft night.
With the Los Angeles Lakers' attempts to construct a multi-team deal or a direct trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves collapsing, ESPN's Jim Gray reports that talk of a potential three-team trade that would involve Minnesota, Boston and Phoenix has been rekindled, in which the primary cost to the Suns would be All-Star forward Shawn Marion moving to the Celtics.
Yet an even bigger trade concept, ESPN.com has learned, was hatched Tuesday by the Wolves, in which Phoenix would likely be asked to trade away the player it has been trying not to trade, All-NBA center Amare Stoudemire, who would go to the Atlanta Hawks.
Either way, indications from various NBA front-office sources suggest that Garnett being moved in conjunction with Thursday's draft looks more likely than ever before, with the Suns -- identified by ESPN.com last week as KG's first choice for a new home -- in prime position to make the big score.
In the scenario reported by Gray, Garnett would go to Phoenix, Boston would land Marion and the Wolves would receive a package featuring the No. 5 overall pick in Thursday's draft along with undisclosed players from the Celtics and Suns.
The key stumbling block for Boston would be Marion's reluctance to play for the Celtics, which sources say was conveyed to both teams last week when the idea of a three-team trade involving these clubs was first made public. With Marion possessing the right to opt out of his contract after next season and become a free agent in July 2008, Boston would undoubtedly be seeking assurances from Marion's camp that he's interested in signing an extension with the Celtics, even though league rules technically would preclude such negotiations until after July 1 (and after the trade).

Kevin Garnett is a double-double machine. In fact, no player in NBA history has had as many consecutive seasons of averaging at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists per season as the Timberwolves forward.

PlayerSeasonsKevin Garnett9 (1998-2006)Larry Bird6 (1979-1984)Wilt Chamberlain 6 (1965-1970)Kareem Abdul-Jabbar5 (1971-1975)Charles Barkley5 (1990-1994)

Another possible stumbling block: Minnesota, sources say, has been adamant that any trade with Boston would include Al Jefferson. The Celtics, in turn, are willing to part with Jefferson only if they're the team that gets Garnett. It remains to be seen if either side softens its stance in the final hours before the draft.
In the newer trade scenario, sources say, Minnesota is looking to acquire Atlanta's No. 3 and No. 11 picks in the draft along with several cap-friendly contracts from the Hawks and Suns. To participate, Atlanta wants Stoudemire from Phoenix.
Such a trade would hold significantly greater appeal to Minnesota than any Celtics' offer that didn't include Jefferson. The Hawks, meanwhile, would be able to reunite Stoudemire with ex-Suns teammate Joe Johnson and immediately field a promising big-and-small core to build around and make Atlanta competitive, given the current state of the Eastern Conference.
The Suns, though, are understandably reluctant to part with Stoudemire after he made the All-NBA first team in what appears to be the most successful comeback from microfracture knee surgery that the NBA has ever witnessed.
The Lakers, meanwhile, haven't abandoned all hope of partnering Garnett with the increasingly frustrated Kobe Bryant just yet. Another concept in circulation Tuesday raised the possibility of a multi-team trade in which the Indiana Pacers' Jermaine O'Neal would go to Atlanta, with Lakers forward Lamar Odom and young center Andrew Bynum heading to the Pacers. That package, at worst, would send the No. 3 pick in the draft to Minnesota as the main payoff for Garnett.
But the Suns increasingly look like the favorites, given that Phoenix is Garnett's preferred destination if he has to leave the only NBA city he has ever known and with the Suns clearly possessing more trade assets. The Wolves are looking for a combination of high draft picks, top young talent and expiring contracts to provide cap relief. The Lakers don't have a draft pick higher than No. 19 to offer and Minnesota, sources say, is not interested in Odom because of the two years and nearly $28 million left on the lanky lefty's contract.
It's believed that the Suns will continue trying to keep Stoudemire out of any deal, but sources say that the athletically gifted 24-year-old is not untouchable -- not with the Wolves having finally made the philosophical commitment to end the Garnett Era after years of speculation and with Phoenix feeling as though there is no better player it could acquire to counter San Antonio's Tim Duncan, who is seen as the Suns' biggest obstacle to getting out of the Western Conference playoffs.
Sources say Minnesota, furthermore, clearly hopes to complete a Garnett trade before the draft begins in hopes of securing a pick in first half of the lottery to go with its own No. 7 selection. The fact that Wolves owner Glen Taylor left the country for China on Tuesday afternoon for his honeymoon doesn't appear to have slowed the Wolves down at all.
Yet it remains to be seen if the Hawks, who have been notoriously reluctant to make roster moves of any sort for months because of their uncertain ownership situation, will actually commit to join in on a trade of this magnitude.
In any case, it's a trade that, even without completion, has seemingly eclipsed one of the most anticipated drafts in years.

I don't like it at all... any trade that will include Amare is crap.

Also, didn't JJ and Amare have issues (reportedly)?

:barf: if this trade goes down like this, Kerr should be Fired IMMEDIATLY....

What kind of GM goes into a situation and the first thing he does is Trade his 24-year-old Franchise 1st Team All-NBA Center, for a 14 year verteran who is 31 years old.

No mention of this a few minutes ago on ESPN TV. The sporstcaster talked about just all Suns with KG coming to Phoenix and Marion going to Boston in a 3 team trade. No mention of Atlanta.

Also Phoenix acquiring Charlotte's pick was reported as a separate deal the Suns are working on.

the ONLY way i would even remotely be close to even considering the possibility of maybe being kinda okay with this deal is if KG says "you know what? MLE for me for the next 4 years is just fine."

BUT.......another hang up would be the fact that sending Amare to the Hawks puts them in the playoffs, and we'd be left with their less valuable pick.

i would need something more sent from the Hawks to the suns, in return for giving them back their pick.

maybe:

Suns trade:
Amare/Atlanta 08/KT
Suns get:
KG/Childress

Hawks trade:
#3/#11/Childress
Hawks get:
Amare/their 08 First back

Wolves trade:
KG
Wolves get:
#3/#11/KT

So, is that your idea of Amare's value on the market? Basicly #3 and Childress, as #11 and their 08 pick is about the same? :(

God I hope your right....

It doesn't make sense. The Suns don't save any money and they don't get any better. Amare and Thomas (I'd assume he'd be the other contract leaving) are better than KG, especially when going against the Spurs. Also, I think it makes the Suns worse against the Mavs.

I just can't fathom a team waiting nearly 40 years to get a franchise big man to have for his entire career just to move him. I refuse to believe they will move Amare, I'm going to feel betrayed if they do.

so let me see if i got this right? suns trade amare (who wouldnt trade straight up for garrnet) to alt along with some other contact for the 3 and 11 picks in the draft and some worthless contacts. and then trade them to the twolves for garrnet? leavng the wolves with the 3,7, and 11 picks in the draft and making the suns draft from alt next year totally worthless. in other words this costs us amare and a very good chance at a lottery pick for garrnet? no thanks that isnt worth it.

Another stupid rumor put out by ESPN. There's no way this is true.
Oh, I think it's right that the Wolves would like it to happen.

Suns obviously won't agree to it, though--in addition to the obvious objections, they would also be sabotaging the value of Atlanta's pick next summer.

I honestly believe this rumor is about 36 hours old, and this is how I believe it went down:

McHale: What would it take to get you to help us complete this deal?
Knight: We want Amare.
McHale: Right. We'll get back to you.

McHale: So, Steve, got any other bright ideas?

Informant to ESPN reporter: What? Other options? Well, we've discussed a three-way with Atlanta involving Amare.

Minnesota: gets a young stud in Williams, a solid player in zaza, an extra lottery pick, end an expiering contract in KT....

ATL: Gets a 1st team All NBA Center, now have a SOLID young core of Johnson, Stat, Smith, Childress... thats a playoff team in the East no doubt...

Phoenix: Gives up their franchise Center (which is a STUPID move anyway) but get KG and Al Horford in return....

I don't even like it this way either...DONT TRADE STAT!

So, is that your idea of Amare's value on the market? Basicly #3 and Childress, as #11 and their 08 pick is about the same? :(

1.) there is A LOT more value being traded around that just players. Atlanta is also eating up ALL their cap space and accomidating people in this trade. using them to eat $10mil in contracts helps the other teams involved.

2.) the #11 pick and the 08 pick have nowhere near the same value. Amare/Smith/Marvin/Johnson is enough to get the Hawks in the playoffs next season. the COULD arguably be the 6-7th seed on the east. taking that into consideration is the #11 is this deep draft the same as the #15-16 in next years draft?

3.) Childress is no scrub. he put up some nice numbers last season, and plays smart. he's only 24 and put up 13/6/3 thoughout most of the end of last season.

---------

i'm not saying its a GREAT trade. but what else do you suggest in a Minny/Atlanta/Phoenix trade?

man forget the trade then if we trade Amare to get Garnett then I just say keep Amare because if we trade Amare we would just be like the suns last year expect with just Garnett instead of Amare dont do it Kerr...

i really don't think NY KG to the Suns deal ends up going down, much less this ridiculously stupid trade.

Whatever happens, Minny will be the team that gets hosed. They are not negotiating from any position of strength.

If Minny doesn't deal KG, he walks next summer to whatever team he wants (for the MLE). He's threatened to do it (it is a lot of money, but he's made a lot of money, and his legacy is at stake). Minny must deal him now, for the best possible return or they will get nothing. They are not winning anything this year anyway.

Phoenix is in the power position. If all else fails, we do nothing, move up in the draft and remain a championship favorite. Our worst fear is cap $, but Sarver is making money on this team as it is. We then sign Garnett for the MLE next year and let Shawn walk.

Atlanta and Boston both have GM's that have to make a clear step toward improvement or they will lose their jobs. Danny Ainge has to find a star player. King has to find some quality veteran leadership.

Time and circumstances are on our side now. The worst thing we could do is panic and give up too much.

Also, on Shawn's behalf. I would want to stay in Phoenix too. For all his complaining, he likes being on this team and wants to stay. He has a shot at a title here. It would be really tough to move away from a title, Nash, and the brand of bball that we play.

All this goes to show what an asset Steve Nash is.

I the whole response type:

"OMG I cant believe they would do this!?! This is an outrage!!!

IF they were to do this, I would ONLY do it for something like...."

Repeat after me: Kerr will not trade our 24 year old superstar franchise player the first year on the job.

Then think of a string of words that could convince you otherwise.

Don't believe the hype folks.
