Agent Zero is finally- officially- coming to the Dallas Cowboys... eventually.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will make an eagerly-awaited return to the jersey number he wore at the University of Texas, the Cowboys revealed on Wednesday after prolonged speculation, partly from the player himself.
In a social media post last week, Overshown teased "an announcement coming," leading many to believe that the jersey change was imminent. Overshown will be the first player in franchise history to wear No. 0 after league rules were altered in 2023 to allow the number to be issued.
"As soon as they changed the policy where you can now wear No. 0 in the NFL, I just knew it was meant to be," Overshown explained this week on the news of his jersey switch.
But he did have to wait two long years.
Overshown was drafted in the third round by the Cowboys the same year the rule change went into effect. The Arp, Tex. native, who already went by the nickname "Agent 0" during his Longhorns career, seemed a natural to take the jersey right out of the gate, but veteran safety Jayron Kearse was initially set to wear the No. 0 instead.
The Cowboys quickly walked back that plan, giving Kearse No. 1 and stating that No. 0 would not be issued at all.
Many Cowboys fans assumed that owner Jerry Jones and the club's marketing arm were reserving the single "0" so as not to be confused with the double "00" worn by Rowdy, the team's mascot, in promotional materials and at live appearances. As Patrik Walker of dallascowboys.com reports, however, "that was never actually true."
The No. 0 does carry a significant amount of clout around the league, with the digit normally going to a player whose performance on the field stands out just as much as the eye-catching jersey. If the Cowboys were waiting to see if Overshown would warrant the attention that wearing No. 0 would bring, he certainly showed it in 2024.
After missing his entire rookie campaign with a torn ACL, Overhshown- wearing No. 13- finally made an electrifying debut in Week 1 last season, racking up 11 tackles, two QB hits, a tackle for loss, and a sack against Cleveland in his first NFL game.
He kept up a torrid pace for most of the season- including an interception returned for a score against the Giants on Thanksgiving Day- before suffering a devastating injury to his other knee on Dec. 9 in a meeting with the Bengals.
Overshown showed plenty over just 13 games, enough to prove he's worthy of being the first in team history to wear No. 0.
Whatever the reason for the wait- Walker alludes to another anonymous "high-profile player on the team" also being in the running for the No. 0 jersey at one time- the digit will now officially be on Overshown's chest... whenever he eventually takes the field. It's too early to say when the 24-year-old will be ready to play, though Overshown himself has promised it will be sooner than expected.
For now, though, the wait to see Agent 0 in the blue and silver will stretch on just a little longer.
"It's just like when Superman put on his cape, when I put that No. 0 on, it's really Agent 0 out there," Overshown told the team website.
"Being the first one to wear it at Texas, growing up a Longhorn and a Cowboy in the great state of Texas — I wear it as a badge of honor," he said. "It's not too many people that get to say they're the first to do anything, and to say I'm the first wear No. 0 at Texas and the first to do it in Dallas Cowboys' history, that's a badge of honor."
