Cant believe there wasnt a thread up about this already.

Anyway, I'm probably not going to say anything you have not already heard.

Very loyal rendition of the stage version, Hooper's method of filming the singing added a lot of emotion that would have been hard to capture dubbed. I was most skeptical going into it of Crowe's casting but I thought he was excellent. Jackman, while his acting was very good, struggled with some of the more bombastic moments in song. All of the other singing performances were excellent. Sasha Baron Cohen steals just about every scene he is in as Thenardier.

Just like the musical, it lags occasionally but the good parts are very very good.

Unless you dislike musicals in general I would highly recommend it.

EDIT: I'd like to fill out an official complaint with the judges over the title edit to "remake". This is not a remake of any version of Les Miserables that has ever been in theaters.

Count me as one who dislikes musicals. Especially musicals derived from novels such as this one.

I should have said nothing to make it stand out--as in, did we really need another fracking Les Mis movie? A clue--no.

judging from the box office numbers, a lot of people think differently then you do.

Did we need a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Transformers movie?

Anything with Nicholas Cage?

Remke of Red Dawn?

Plot Summary: "Les Misérables" is the motion-picture adaptation of the beloved global stage sensation seen by more than 60 million people in 42 countries and in 21 languages around the globe and still breaking box-office records everywhere in its 27th year. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, "Les Misérables" tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

In December 2012, the world's longest-running musical brings its power to the big screen in Tom Hooper’s sweeping and spectacular interpretation of Victor Hugo's epic tale. With international superstars and beloved songs–including "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and "On My Own"–"Les Misérables," the show of shows, is now reborn as the cinematic musical experience of a lifetime.

There has never been a big screen movie made from the musical. Fans of the musical have been clamoring for a film to be made out of it for 20+ years.

The plot varies dramatically from the book and the Liam Neeson version. I dont think anyone would consider this a "remake" of that movie. The musical supersedes the 1998 film, this movie is entirely based on the musical production.

If you think a notation in the title is needed putting "musical" would make a lot more sense then "remake".

No we didn't, no we didn't, and no we didn't.

I just consider the fact that this is the fifth Les Mis movie ever made. That seems a tad excessive, musical or no.

This movie is as much a remake of Liam Neeson's Les Mis as the HBO series "The Pacific" can be called a remake of "South Pacific".

It's not a remake of Les Miserables per se but a film adaptation of the Broadway musical Le Mis.
