We have played two games and this board has gone crazy. Fire the coach, the players suck, what has happened to you all? It could be a lot worse, we could be Seattle fans.

Everyone needs to relax, it's a long season. Every team is going to have its highs and lows, so just enjoy the ride. By the way, no getting back on the wagon if you jump.:)

Suns fans need to relax

Mike D'Antoni has a big problem.

The Suns coach really wanted to have fun this season, savoring each step and victory along the way. But his team has given him an early headache. And the suffocating climate on Planet Orange won't give him room to breathe.

To put it bluntly, most Suns fans just want their darned trophy, and they'd like it on layaway before Christmas.
"We can't play the Finals today, so we have to start working and get back to it," D'Antoni said.

Granted, not much about the Suns' 119-98 loss Friday night made anyone think about hoisting banners. The Suns played fat and lazy, lacking focus and tenacity. If you didn't know better, you would have thought the Lakers were title contenders and the hosts were the team in turmoil.

It was that bad.

"We got outplayed from the start of the game," the Suns' Grant Hill said. "I guess we're not going to win all 82."

You can write off this game as a wake-up call. It was tremendously embarrassing to the players. It featured some sniping between D'Antoni and Lakers coach Phil Jackson, during and after the game. And it was probably just what the Suns needed to find their legs and their appetite.

But in the bigger picture, this is not a cute, little story anymore. Expectations are high. Premium parking spots around the arena are going for $30. It's a championship-or-bust mentality, which is fine, except for one problem:

It's barely November. It's too early to talk about long-awaited justice, long-awaited championships or parade routes. Yet near the end of the first half, with the visiting Lakers running a layup drill on offense, it felt like the sold-out crowd could barely suppress the urge to boo.

And by the team the beating was finished, you know just what the cynics were thinking: How is this team going to stop Tim Duncan?

"It's completely out of control. Way out of control," D'Antoni said. "I just have to shut it down. I can't read or listen (to anything). It's just too much. Every shot, every little thing is, 'Yeah, but how will that translate into winning a championship?' "

With great controversy dogging the Lakers, a team dealing with a moody, disgruntled superstar, Suns fans clearly expected a party in their home opener. It made perfect sense. Even Jackson sounded like a man expecting a blowout, admitting that his team can't help but be distracted by Kobe Bryant's ongoing trade wishes.

Yet it's not as if Jackson will ever concede too much, and before Friday's game, he was sure to say that (a) the Suns' window of opportunity was closing; (b) that he, too, was interested in acquiring Hill, but Hill never returned his phone call; (c) and that these two teams were like "neighbors that haven't really built a fence, so you don't really like them that much."

Then again, not many people at US Airways Center liked the Suns team that took the court Friday night, either, and here's the problem:

For the fourth consecutive season, the Suns have a new starting lineup. As usual, it will take a while to build chemistry, to gain swagger, to define roles. We have seen this movie before, and we should all know by now that ragged performances in the first week of the season should not prompt a huge rush on antacid. Besides, the Lakers played a near-perfect game.

But something else is clear:

Basketball fans here have seen the 60-win seasons, and unlike the coach, they don't want to savor the journey. People here just want their revenge, their pound of flesh. They would like to press fast-forward and begin the Western Conference finals as soon as possible.

Problem is, while you're ready, the basketball team isn't. It needs some time to grow. And for the rest of us, that means recognizing the process and backing away from the panic button.

relax. yes relax. I know you guys are like championship or bust. that's how it was in dallas last year too. but the suns have a long road ahead of them. nothing they did last night is going to be the difference. I'm sure things will get better soon. 1-1.

The moral of the story is that you certainly don't want your team to peak at the beginning of the season. Starting out slow is not so bad as long as it's part of developing and conditioning the team for a strong finish.

How many of us really think the regular season means a whole lot in the NBA anyway? The title is not won in November. We owe them the benefit of the doubt right now. This team will be fine.

Considering that the suns are out of game shape, came in at 4AM, are still nursing minor injuries, and Amare had one of his not caring games he tends to throw in there. I am not to concerned, sure it's embarrasing as hell to get wasted but I expect this team to be pissed on Sunday, if not then D'Antoni needs to pull out his cupcake speech.

it really irks me when i see posts like this

as though being upset is somehow unwarranted after last night

i don't expect nightly wins. i do expect effort and acting like you give a damn and having your mind in the game. EVERY NIGHT. to be lacking these CORE and FUNDAMENTAL elements of basketball last night is just sad. its not like they were overlooking the home opener.

i feel bad for the folks that worked hard all day and spent their money to go and watch a team that simply mailed it in. i mean, 'forgetting' that the 2nd half started and needing to be subbed in after? seriously? even ricky davis isn't that out of it...

I agree lefty everyone just needs to calm down its better to be struggling a little bit then to be struggling near playoff time :). I'm pretty sure the suns will start clicking when they need to when the time comes

in the WC the key is making the playoffs. matchups come playoff time are key as well. that #1 seed is nice if you can avoid a second round matchup with spurs or mavs like the last two seasons. The last two seasons the WC was decided in the second round. no disrespect, but phoenix without amare wasn't going to be nearly the trouble that the spurs were for the mavs. the regular season is a long ride.

Clearly the Suns have started the season playing flat. The question is why? As long as the answer is not hinged to Steve Nash, I can live with it and eventually the ship should be righted. However, nothing can explain the poor defense the Suns played last night. Too bad in the Derek Fisher situation he could not have made his way to Phoenix instead of LA. He would have made the perfect backup PG for Nash. IMO, his uncanny shooting early in the game swung the momentum the Lakers way.

I still feel like crap. that game was horrible. I still can't get the thought out of my head that Steve Nash might just be getting old (thanks cheese)

A "championship caliber" team that doesn't know how to box out and thinks running around like confused deer is a good enough defense is just that, sad.

I know its just one game, but I'm starting to feel that way as well. The turning point of the game was when DFish went at him for 3 straight jumpers. After the game, Phil said he went to Fish early because Nash was an area they wanted to attack. We don't give Nash that much crap about his D because he does other things at an elite level but where does that lead us if his game declines this season? The worst sequence of the night was when Nash just kept on dribbling and dribbling, and leaving his feet to throw passes out of bounds. He looked like Marcus Banks out there.

This year is the current groups last chance. I'm glad Kerr is on board as the GM because he doesn't have the small ball mentality that has been the franchises blue print forever.

your welcome! it's only two games guys. I don't even plan on watching any games that are on until ten games in anymore with this team. Not happy, but not completely worried yet.

that being said, I think DA makes himself look like a baby an awful lot. Way to let Phil know that what he's doing is actually getting to you... in Game 2 - come on, be a little mentally tougher than that you crybaby.
