The Jacksonville Jaguars addressed the offensive line unit heavily in free agency.
Among the 10 outside additions made by GM James Gladstone, four of them were offensive linemen. This included bringing in center Robert Hainsey, guard Patrick Mekari, who can play all five positions, along with tackles Fred Johnson and Chuma Edoga.
Earlier in the offseason, head coach Liam Coen said that the offensive line unit for the Jaguars had to improve this season. So now, how does he feel about this unit after free agency?
"Yes, physical is a mass and size issue, but it's also a mentality," Coen said at the NFL league meeting. "It's also the way it's coached, the way it's taught, the way it's preached. I'm kind of in a hold on evaluating that part. Do I think we've got competition and depth? Absolutely.
"I think we got some good sound, solid players that are going to help elevate that floor. But let's go wait and see what it truly looks like when we actually go and compete and do things the way that we're going to do them."
This was a unit last season that ranked 19th in ESPN's pass-block win rate and 25th in run-block win rate.
While the focus on the outside is on how Coen gets Trevor Lawrence back to form, accomplishing that starts with the offensive line play. Having a strong run game to lean on is an important element of Coen's offense, not to mention that we all know how important it is for the quarterback to have time in the pocket.
The offensive line additions made by the Jaguars in free agency certainly helped raise the floor of that unit, as Coen said. However, I doubt that it precludes them from further adding to that group in the NFL draft.
As Coen alludes to, the Jaguars still don't quite know what they have in the current offensive line unit, so they shouldn't shy away from continuing to add talent to bolster the competition. It's also not as if any of the free agent contracts should have a long-term impact on the Jaguars' approach to the position either.
