To make room for Herges and Vargas, the Diamondbacks designated right-handed pitcher Kerry Ligtenberg for assignment and sent Matt Kata to Triple-A Tucson.

"Matt is a guy who is used to playing on a regular basis, so it will work out when he comes back up here. He'll be ready to come off the bench and stay ready to hit," Melvin said. "Kerry is a big leaguer and I hope someone picks him up. If not, we'd be glad to have him back."
