We have a real problem!
It was fun watching Junior Spivey play well last year (until he was moved from 2nd to 3rd in the lineup) . . . and Danny Bautista is one of my favorite players (a .300 clutch hitter).
But . . . . . . any team that has Spivey batting third and Bautista fifth has a real problem. We desperately need a middle-of-the-lineup hitter to join Gonzo.
Even in these initial games, it's not a slump we're in. It is what it is!
My wish is to pry Vladimir Guerrero from the Expos. Then we'd be Championship material. But that's evidently not going to happen.
Larry Walker would have been a major plus, but Matt Williams shot that out of the water.
And, although I believe that Erubiel Durazo will hit 40 HR and drive in 100 runs with Oakland this season, I don't think he would have ever been at that level in the National League. Or, to put it another way, he was given chances and didn't do it. DH'ing is the only way he can stay healthy, both physically and emotionally.
Even signing Fred McGriff for 1B, as the Dodgers did, would have filled that void.
Last year, Steve Finley hit just three less HR than Gonzo. For the time being, instead of hitting him 2nd and Spivey 3rd, switch them around.
But, if we are going to take advantage of the last years of Johnson, Schilling, and Gonzo (our three superstars), Joe Garagiola, Jr., is going to have to find a bat to join Gonzo in the 3-4 spots in the batting order.
Anything less than that, and we'll be out of it all season long!
