Pena Joins Cruise in Lions for Lambs
Source: Variety
January 18, 2007

Michael Pena has joined Lions for Lambs, the Robert Redford-directed drama that marks the first film for United Artists since Tom Cruise and C/W partner Paula Wagner signed on to revive the company for Harry Sloan's MGM.

Variety says Pena will play an Army Ranger lieutenant and platoon leader in Afghanistan, and he and his men become the catalyst for multiple overlapping storylines.

Cruise, Meryl Streep and Redford also star in the drama.

Derek Luke was just added to the cast. He'll play a soldier.

This movie will bomb, just like Rendition.

I think it looks decent. May not do well in the box office, but will be a good flick.

Lions for Lambs is supposed to be very long on speeches while offering mostly questions, but few answers. That's the gist of what I've read about it anyway.

That is what I was expecting. The commercials, and the casting of Redford and Streep, seem to suggest a sort of liberal ranting sort of movie.

Lions for Lambs

Release Date: November 9, 2007
Studio: United Artists (MGM)
Director: Robert Redford
Screenwriter: Matthew Michael Carnahan
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: R (for some war violence and language)
Website: Lions for Lambs

Starring: Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Michael Pena, Derek Luke, Andrew Garfield

Plot Summary: Robert Redford, Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise star in "Lions for Lambs," a powerful and gripping story that digs behind the news, the politics and a nation divided to explore the human consequences of a complicated war.

Directed by Academy Award® winner Robert Redford, the story begins after two determined students at a West Coast University, Arian (Derek Luke) and Ernest (Michael Pena), follow the inspiration of their idealistic professor, Dr. Malley (Redford), and attempt to do something important with their lives. But when the two make the bold decision to join the battle in Afghanistan, Malley is both moved and distraught. Now, as Arian and Ernest fight for survival in the field, they become the string that binds together two disparate stories on opposite sides of America. In California, an anguished Dr. Malley attempts to reach a privileged but disaffected student (Andrew Garfield) who is the very opposite of Arian and Ernest. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C. the charismatic Presidential hopeful, Senator Jasper Irving (Cruise), is about to give a bombshell story to a probing TV journalist (Streep) that may affect Arian and Ernest’s fates. As arguments, memories and bullets fly, the three stories are woven ever more tightly together, revealing how each of these Americans has a profound impact.

Michael Pena and his storyline in Crash were the only reason I liked that movie.

He was also excellent in WTC.

This movie shouldn't disappoint.

So this movie sort of disappointed.

Once again Michael Pena was involved in a storyline that really had me on the edge of my seat.

But I hated the Tom Cruise/Meryl Streep interference.

The Redford/student story was needed to build the Pena/Luke story. And that was excellent.

Could've been much better.

Worth the rental. 3/5

Absolutely LOVED this movie.

Perfect questions to ask in today's world. Best movie I've seen in a long time.

Just watched it. Yes, this movie basically consisted of two conversations. Good performances, but the film was average at best.
