It was a great moment to see Oakwood native Katelyn Young and Danville native Erin Houpt compete in the NCAA women's basketball tournament.

But it was a fleeting moment as both Young's Murray State University team and Houpt's San Diego State team had rough first games.

The Racers played Iowa at Norman, Okla. with the Hawkeyes coming away with a 92-57 win. Young had six points, seven rebounds and two assists in the game before leaving with an injury in the third quarter.

Young ends her career as the top scorer in Murray State history as the team finished with a 25-8 record.

The Aztecs lost to LSU 103-48 in Baton Rouge, La. as Houpt had two rebounds in 10 minutes of play. San Diego State ends the season with a 25-10 record.

Danville native Tevin Smith's season will continue after the Cleveland State men's basketball team beat Queens (N.C.) 88-73 in the College Basketball Invitational. Smith had 13 points for the Vikings, who will play Florida-Gulf Coast today at 8 p.m. in the semifinals. The game will be shown on ESPNU.

Texas 65, Illinois 48

AUSTIN, Texas — The Illini women's season ended on Monday with a NCAA second-round loss to the Longhorns.

Adalia McKenzie had 13 points with three rebounds and three assists in the last game of her career for Illinois, while Berry Wallace had 12 points, Kendall Bostic had eight points, eight rebounds in her final game and Genesis Bryant had eight points with five rebounds and three steals in her last game.

The Illini end the season with a 22-10 record.

PREP BASEBALL

M-S 19, Danville 0

DANVILLE — The Vikings could not get a hit as they lost to Mahomet-Seymour in four innings on Monday.

Marvin Davis took the loss on the mound for Danville, who will play Oakwood today.

Westville 17, Paris 1

PARIS — Westville had 18 hits as it beat Paris in four innings in the battle of the Tigers.

Matt Darling had four hits with a home run and four RBIs for Westville, while Easton Barney had three hits and four RBIs, Kip Appl had two RBIs, Cameron Steinbaugh had two hits and a RBI, Jace Smith had an RBI and Easton Bolin added two hits.

Westville will play Unity today.

BHRA splits in triangular

CARMI — The Blue Devils beat host Carmi 8-5, but lost to Robinson 9-3 on Saturday.

In the first game, Caden Keleminic had 11 strikeouts on the mound for Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin, while Cruz Dubois had four hits and a RBI, Jaxen Spicer had two RBIs, Austin Campbell had two hits and RBI and Chaz Dubois and Mason Brines each had an RBI.

Spicer had two hits and two RBIs for the Blue Devils in the second game, with Reed Zarate getting an RBI and Cruz Dubois getting two hits.

BHRA will take on St. Joseph-Ogden on Wednesday.

Unity 5, Oakwood 0

OAKWOOD — The Comets had three hits but could not get a run in against the Rockets on Monday.

Jackson Dudley, Bryson Marcinko and Xander Wilson each had a hit for Oakwood, who were coming off a 9-3 loss to Arcola on Saturday. Chase Harrison and Carsen Dudley each had an RBI in the loss.

Central 10, Hoopeston Area 0

CHAMAPIGN — The Cornjerkers only had two hits as they were shutout by the Maroons.

Dallas Sheppard and Reydon Montez each had a hit for Hoopeston Area, who will play Paris today.

A-P sweeps Oblong

ARMSTRONG — The Trojans beat Oblong/Hutsonville/Palestine 9-3 in the first game and 15-4 in the second game on Saturday.

Traxton Roberts had two hits and two RBIs for Armstrong-Potomac in the first game, while Becket Moran had two hits and a RBI and Davyn Franzen, Carter Freeman, Rhys Showalter and Cole Bailey each had one RBI. Ryan Edwards had 10 strikeouts on the mound.

In the second game, Edwards had three hits with three RBIs, while Roberts had two RBIs, Moran had two hits and a RBI and Franzen, Freeman, Bailey, Braxton Self and JT Frerichs each had an RBI.

The Trojans will play Fisher on Wednesday.

PREP SOFTBALL

Salt Fork 8, Danville 1

TILTON — The Storm put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning to get the win over the Vikings on Saturday.

Alexa Jamison had a two-RBI triple for Salt Fork, while Hayden Ehrich had two hits and a RBI, Sailor Pacot and Karli McGee each had one RBI and Ava Ringstrom, Morgan Russell and Bella Kurtenbach each had two hits. Russell gave up four hits and struck out three on the mound

Ka'Leah Bellik had a solo home run for Danville, while Kendall Rannebarger had four strikeouts on the mound.

The Vikings will face Paris today while the Storm are 3-0 and will play Friday against Marshall.

Westville 16, Heritage 0

WESTVILLE — Layla Atwood pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts as the Tigers beat the Hawks in four innings.

Atwood also had two hits and two RBIs at the plate for Westville, while Taylor Valangeon had two RBIs and Lilly Kiesel had two hits and a RBI.

The Tigers will play St. Joseph-Ogden today.

Oakwood/Schlarman wins two

ARMSTRONG — The Comets were able to beat Georgetown-Ridge Farm 18-3 and host Armstrong-Potomac 4-1 on Saturday.

Gracie Hanner had three hits with a home run and five RBIs for Oakwood/Schlarman Academy, while Irene Rangel had four hits with three RBIs, Caydence Vermillion had two hits and two RBIs, Bella Bradford and Harper O'Brien each had two RBIs, Samantha Dunavan had four hits and an RBI, Je'Lanna Tall had an RBI, Avery Trimmell had three hits and Lainee Smith had two hits. Annistyn Tovey and Madeline Nevels each had one RBI and Peyton McComas had two hits for the Buffaloes.

Rangel had two hits and a RBI for the Comets against the Trojans and had 13 strikeouts on the mound. Acasia Gernentz had six strikeouts on the mound for Armstrong-Potomac.

The Trojans would beat Geo-RF 13-5. Tinley Parkerson and Ashlynn Ackerman each had four RBIs, while Mackenna Ackerman had two RBIs and Elle Jameson had two hits and a RBI. Tovey had two RBIs and McComas had one RBI for the Buffaloes.

Armstrong-Potomac then beat Blue Ridge 4-0 on Monday. Ashlynn Ackerman had three hits with two RBIs and Makenna Ackerman had two hits and a RBI. Gernetz had nine strikeouts and gave up only two hits.

The Comets played St. Joseph-Ogden on Monday and lost 10-2. Hanner had three hits, Rangel had two hits and an RBI and Tall had one RBI.

The Buffaloes would rebound on Monday with a 10-4 win over Tri-County. Chloe Stephenson had 10 strikeouts on the mound and drove in two runs for Geo-RF, while Kendra Morfey had two hits and two RBIs and Madi Spesard and Kaylynn Payne each had one RBI.

BHRA loses two

CASEY — The Blue Devils lost to Casey-Westfield 13-2 and Clifton Central 7-3 in triangular action on Saturday.

Ava Acton had a two-run home run against Casey-Westfield for Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin in the first game, while Emma Shelato had three hits and two RBIs, Madi Stevenson had two hits and a RBI and Callie Carpenter had two hits.

The Blue Devils will play Milford today.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Danville wins consolation

DECATUR — Elizabeth Skrovan hit a goal in sudden death overtime as the Vikings won the consolation title of the Decatur St. Teresa Tournament on Friday.

Danville played Mount Zion on Monday and will play Urbana University on April 3.

PREP TRACK

Local teams hit Armer invite

CHAMPAIGN — Danville, Salt Fork, Oakwood, Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin and Westville were part of the Gene Armer Invitational on Saturday.

The Viking boys ended up tied for third as a team. D'Mario Jackson won the 60 meter dash (6.94 seconds) and the 200 (22.16) while Matthew Sherman was third in the pole vault (14 feet, 5.25 inches), Jerry Reed III was fourth in the triple jump (42-5.5) and the 800 relay of Jayden Rowell, Reed. JaVaughn Robinson and Jackson was fourth (1:33.24).

Connor Smith was third in the 200 for Oakwood (22.47), Maddux Stine was third in the shot put (49-6 1/2) for Salt Fork, Ja'Den Whorrall was 11th in the 200 (23.71) for Westville and Issac Cahill was 11th in the high jump (5-10 3/4).

In the girls meet, Danville was 11th as Samantha Brown won the pole vault with a new indoor school record of 10-8, Jamia Esther was third in the 60 dash (7.73) and the 800 relay team of Esther, Nickiya Shields, Jhe'Nyi Parker and Ashanti Conaway was fourth (1:46.12).

Callie Richardson was second in the 3,200 (12:12) and fourth in the 1,600 (5:48) for Salt Fork, while Aubri Elliott was 17th in the 200 (28.94) for Oakwood and Lainey Wictowski was 15th (30-1/4) for Westville in the shot put.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

DACC swept by John Wood

QUINCY — The Jaguars suffered two close losses to the Trailblazers on Saturday.

Danville Area Community College lost the first game 2-1 to John Wood as Chris Lewis had two hits and a RBI while Eric Rodriguez gave up five hits and had a strikeout on the mound.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the eighth inning of the second game, but the Trailblazers scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 win.

Lewis and Braxton Waller each had two hits and a RBI and Ethan Durbin had an RBI.

The Jaguars will play Lewis & Clark on Friday.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

DACC sweeps John Wood

QUINCY — The Jaguars won the first game 14-1 and the second game 8-1 over the Trailblazers on Saturday.

Alyssa Acton had three hits and four RBIs for Danville Area Community College, while Ella Myers, Zoe Foxworthy-Dejournett and Kaylee Kline each had two hits and two RBIs, Molly Besser had three hits and a RBI, Chloe Hunt had two hits and a RBI and Pailei Cripe had three hits. Kenzie Fasig had four strikeouts and gave up three hits.

In the second game, Mia Herbert had three hits and three RBIs, while Marin Gonski had three hits and two RBIs, Kennedy Highley had four hits and two RBIs and Kynedi Humphrey had an RBI and Jocelyn Peal had seven strikeouts on the mound.

MEN'S COLLEGE GOLF

DACC 10th in Preview

PEORIA — The Jaguars competed in the Cougar Preview at Weaver Ridge Golf Club over the weekend.

After two rounds, Danville Area Community College ended up 10th with a score of 633.

Blake Arnold shot a two-round total of 154 for the Jaguars to finish in 19th, while Josh Mathew shot a 155 to take 23rd. Connor Cambpell was 41st with a score of 159 and Konnor Craven shot a 165 to take 69th.

FPHL HOCKEY

Dashers swept in Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. — After getting a win on Thursday, the Dashers could not build a winning steak as they were swept by the Danbury Hat Tricks.

On Friday, the Dashers lost 9-0 as Parker Rutherford had 62 saves.

Danville lost Saturday's game 6-3 as Quinn O'Reilly had a goal and a assist. Blake Siewertsen and Juhwon Davis each had a goal, Andrew Uturo had two assists and Josh Labelle, Tim Delaney and Yosuke Jumonji each had an assist.

Rutherford had 48 saves for the Dashers, who will return to the David S. Palmer Arena on Friday to start a weekend set with the Watertown Wolves.
