You all are probably right about the coaching, but come on. Zendejas missed 2 extra points, BOTH of which would have won the game. That is unbelievable and unacceptable. I hope he's a senior because I NEVER want to see that kid in an Arizona uniform ever again.

Foles only had like 15 passing attempts in the first half most of which were underneath safe plays. And for some reason Stoops thought it would be a good idea to bring Matt Scott in for two prime field position drives in the first half when he is clearly the inferior quarterback. Once we started going with what has worked all season in the second half (Juron Criner deep routes opening up the field) Foles was excellent.
fair enough. :)

I think there's something definitely suspect about the game plan when ASU can show up with exactly ONE defensive look for the whole game and Arizona can't put up points in the first half. Even against UCLA ASU showed a few different looks. Not this game. They played base every single play.
Question since I was having this debate with other UA fans last night. Do you think Nick Foles is an NFL QB? I think he has the arm strength, accuracy, and intangibles. His footwork could get better and nobody knows how a kid will adjust to an NFL system but I think he's a middle of the draft kind of guy.

I don't see why not. He dinks and dunks but has proven he can throw a good, accurate deep ball. He's not a runner but can move around a bit, and he has prototypical size.

First rounder, no (unless he has a monster senior year, which is possible), but certainly someone you could draft.

It's difficult to say, but he can make all the throws. His footwork is OK, not bad. He strides too much. You'd like to see him have a shorter, choppier motion, but he's got that infielder arm motion that helps cut down the time on his release. Arm strength is overrated, but to have that kind of arm and be able to make all the throws accurately and with touch, I'd love it if the Cards took a chance on him in the third round. He throws an NFL deep ball right now. Derek Anderson could learn a lot from him.

He's kind of old school, though. If you're not going to mobile, you at least need to be able to feel the pocket and buy time for your receivers. That would be my only knock on him and his biggest question mark. That and he doesn't spend a lot of time under center, but I think he's spent enough that you don't worry too much about that transition.

Second one would have only tied the game

He has the measurables, arm, and accuracy and he defintely can read a defense. Altough he is a statue in the pocket (his biggest flaw) I saw him make multiple difficult NFL throws over the season.

As of now he might be a undrafted FA or late rounder at best for this year. Just too many good QBs in this draft likely pushing other guys down who actually might be pretty good.

But he should lead a potent offense next year with the ultra talented Buckner taking the place of Criner as the big play threat and the freshman WR's getting better over the course of the next month of practice.

If he does well next year and plays well when the lights are on, he concievably could be a 2nd or 3rd rounder, maybe even as long as he doesnt regress. For the record Matt Barkley is unequvically the first pick taken next year IMO. Not sure about first round with the potential "system QB" hanging over his name though.

Another thing to like is he was a part of 2 game winning drives and probably should have been 3 last week. If if he improves on that, it bodes well for his NFL future.

I liked what I saw from Foles. And as was mentioned on the ASU board, his politely waiting for Erickson's interview to be over before offering congratulations came across very well, too.

Nevermind.

Last night's game changed me from a believer to someone who believes that Stoops can't do it. I still maintain that he did an amazing job getting the program to where it is:

- Getting players drafted to the NFL
- 3 consecutive bowl games
- I believe we have beat a ranked team in each season under Stoops
- Coaching guys up from 2 star high school athletes to Pac10 honors

But, last night showed that he just doesn't have what it takes and I'm afraid that if we're not improving we'll be taking some steps back. We weren't prepared on all levels. Again, our special teams play was atrocious. And the list goes on.

I'm fine with him finishing out his contract, but lets have Byrne looking for his replacement.

Bear Down.

Unfortunately, we:

A. Don't have the money to buy him out and pay another coach
B. Don't have anyone better available to take his place

He is not going anywhere.

It's amazing how things are so different 1 year later.
A lot of people saw this coming. Stoops has never been a good coach, Erickson could always recruit, Sendek has always been mediocre, and Sean Miller has always been upper echelon.

Things are just reverting back to norm.

Yeah I have to say Stoops has hit his ceiling and I am no longer a believer my self.

The good news is Byrne is the Sean Miller of Athletic Directors. I am glad that when it becomes time to search, he will be the one heading up the process.

Yesterday I would have said you had a shot at Dan Mullen, but he just got $2.6 mil a year to stay in Starkville

To be honest, as a Sun Devil football fan, the Cats are right were you want your rival to be - mediocre. If your rival becomes too bad, they will make a change and might bring in someone truly talented. Stoops really keeps the Cats mediocre. He can't coach very well, but can bring in some talent based on name. He has been able to hire a couple of good assistants, and quite frankly, he lucked into playing Foles after he had chosen 'the other guy' last year. That was the best move Stoops has made in the last 6 years.

Tomey was better than average.

BTW, Now that the PAC12 starts next year - this conference is poised to get more national attention with a TV deal, etc. A mediocre coach is going to be even more exposed.

"Extend Stoops"!

Considering Osweiller didn't get a first-team rep until Threet got hurt and became an instant revelation, I'm not certain this is criteria you want to use to judge Stoops.

And Matt Scott looked really good when he was forced into action this year.

Bill Belichek is lucky then, too and not a good coach?

He won't be extended. His last year will be 2012 at the latest. Facilities gotta get built first. Arizona fans and the administration realize how poorly he conducts himself and how marginal his ceiling is as a head coach. Problem is hiring someone better is largely a pipe dream when you consider our salary limitations and ancient facilities.

To change up the conversation a bit, how's this for a little idea:

Hire Mike Leach as OC.

Does that not make a crap-load of sense? It's his offense after-all. He needs to clean up his name a bit and some good years at UA might do that.

But will he and Stoops clash? Probably.

And here's the kicker... if everything goes well, Leach doesn't act like an cornholio, how about we give him the keys to the program after Stoops' contract runs out?

Thoughts?

Leach can be a HC at a mid tier program rather then be an OC at just below mid tier program.

Besides we just hired Anea (sp?) from BYU who was there former OC and looks to be our Oline coach from what I have read. Alot of guys on staff who can call plays. I am looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table.
