This fall will be my 52nd season as a Cards fan. I believe Jeff Gollin and Johnh have been fans longer and of course 40yearfan followed the team when they played in Eden. So who among ASFN posters has been a fan the longest?

Just think if you started following the Cardiac Cards you've been a fan for almost 40 years.

Sorry for these nostalgia threads its NJCardsfan's fault for posting the link to the 38-0 Cowboys game from 1970. :D

I've been a fan since 1947, when the Cards (with the million dollar backfield) defeated the Eagles. The Eagles returned the favor the next year, and I'm still waiting for another championship. Although living in NY all my life, I've been a lifelong Cardinal fan. MY love for the Cardinals started in 1946 with the baseball Cardinals and Stan the Man. And while we haven't won, "We've Come A Long Way Baby", since UOP stadium opened. It will happen sooner rather than later, and I hope I'm still around to see it.

1968, only lost one of their last 10 games, beat the Browns twice, and Cleveland makes the playoffs and we don't. Same thing happened in 1964 when we beat and tied Cleveland. Beat the Steelers instead of that stupid tie and we could have been the team Namath beat in the Super Bowl. :D

Good time to become a Cardinal fan. Bet you never knew what you were in for after the Cards went 31-11 your first three years as a fan.

November 24, 1963: Cardinals versus Giants at Yankee Stadium, my first pro football game as an 8 year old kid. I fell in love with Larry Wilson and the red Cardinals on the milk white helmets.

Interestingly, I read an article where Joe Maddon, manager of the Tampa Bay Rays, said that he became a Cardinal fan for life on that same day at Yankee Stadium.

damn....y'all is some old bastids!!

I have always followed the Cards,...along with Pitt, Jets, and Miami,...as well as Oakland and green bay...well...not actually ALWAYS of course,lol...but since the mid seventies when I was a pup....but I grew up in nor cal, and a Raiders fan.....started with a meeting against the cowpukes...the ones everybody called americas team....my first ever pro game...and this local team in silver and black just destroyed them...48-3 was it?? I remember cowgirls being carried off the field on nearly every play....that got me hooked as an nfl diehard...

then, many years later my grandmother was trying to convince me to move to Arizona....I had a great laugh at that.."why would I move here grams? Az does not even have a pro football team!!"
That night as we had dinner, the news showed a convoy of moving vans leaving St Louis with the announcement the Cardinals were moving to Phoenix....
Granny looks over at me, grins,...and asks,"so,...is there anything else you need?"...and I stayed in Arizona, adopted the Cards as my home team.....and have been getting helplessly deeper into the emotional mess every season.
Its a great running joke amongst my peeps,...they all know I love the Birds.....but they do not all know I have a severe case of Low T..... and every time I discuss the Cardinals I get emotional and teary eyed.... the locals down here in Louisiana are like,"wow, that big skinhead feller from out west sure loves them Cardinals,...cries every time we talk about them"...lol

when they moved to Arizona, about 40 or more qB's ago. I was an Arizona browns fan before that from 1968. Leroy Kelly years - the drive and the fumble- MNM - 09 saints playoff collapse I have suffered defeat as a fan- with Nary a championship.

I think Michael ought to give Pottsville the cursed championship, cause like screw this!

I trump that by only 2 or 3 years - Before I learned how to read (which would be about 1945), I was already a StL Cardinal bb fan but was starting to bug my Dad each week: "Did the (football) Cardinals win today?" Unlike the Cardinals of Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter, Harry the Cat Brecheen and Howie Pollet, the football Cardinals at the time were "0 & a Gazillion." 1947 was my first feel-good year as a Chicago Cardinal rooter.

(Note - But Garth and I share another common history. I grew up in Scarsdale, NY - where Garth still lives & we can share memories of the Garth Road apartments, the waterfall behind the train station, former Scarsdale HS football coaches etc.)

The 38 - 0 Win Over Team Felon

Wasn't that the MNF game when Howard Cosell apparently drank himself under the table during the first half, and we heard Dandy Don say (as only he could say it):

"Howard is feeling a little bit under the weather and won't be joining us for the second half..."

Sweet!

I am going on 38 yrs as a fan. Went to many games in the 70's at the old Busch Stadium. My uncle had season tickets so I would go with him. My parents gave me .25ct to take the Bi State bus that would go right past the stadium. I would meet my uncle at the Stan Musial Statue

I've been a Cardinal football fan since 1964, the year the baseball Cardinals beat the Yankees in the WS. We lived in Syracuse, NY, but my Dad had always been a baseball Cardinal fan. Pro football was no where near being as popular as college football was then, so my Dad had no clear favorite pro team. I was 6 yrs old & my Dad told me to pick a team & that would be OUR team. I was watching a televised preseason game in 64 against the Bears & was intrigued that there was also a St. Louis Cardinals football team. Already in love with Cardinal red, it made for an easy decision.

1967 for me and and was a fanatic from the start. Charley Johnson being drafted was the big story at the time.

1964 for me. I was a junior in high school and everyone I knew was a Crowboy fan. I just wanted to be different. I chose the Cardinals because I loved the white helmet with the Cardinal on it.

I'm not a historian and there are decades of their history I don't remember, but then again, there are decades of my own life I don't remember either. I've just always been a fan and couldn't dream of rooting for another team.

1969 for me.

We were living in Columbia, MO at the time, my dad was also a Cards fan...we ended up moving to Indiana later that year, but I always remained a Cardinals fan no matter where I ended up living.

(My dad eventually became a Colts fan BTW. I'll never forgive him for that.)
